Go to the other end of Crete and try Myrtos - nowhere near as busy as Paleohora. Personally I found Thassos a bit souless, but that may have been because it was early season.

Try Haraki on Rhodes - 2 streets and that's it!

Longos on Paxos - bit expesive food wise but probably everyone's ideal of a Greek island hideaway.

If you would consider going independently, there's far more choice :D

I am going to Sivota in September which is supposed to be quiet, relaxing, un commercial with lovely scenery and sandy coves.

I will report when I get back.

Meanwhile, check this website for details

Hi gedmac
Read my report on Gialova (a bit further down this page) could be just what you're looking for! We love quiet uncommercialised Greece and we definitely found it here, loved it so much we'll be going back!
If you don't want to go independently try Simply Travel, Simpsons travel or Filoxenia they go to this village but are probably a lot more expensive then DIY!

We have visited many Greel Islands as well as other places but find the most relaxing, beautiful scenery, lovely people on Kefalonia, still very Greek in most places, maybe more expensive than others Greek Islands but worth it for all it has to offer, been every month between May and Ocober never found it too crowded where we go Lixouri, a lot of people find this area dull but suits us, I suppose July/August things maybe different but I still don't think too bad.

Yes, we went to Mounda Beach, near Skala, beautiful beach, nothing there but a small cafe/taverna, but not very far into Skala. We stayed in the self-catering Marina Bay Studios, but there is an hotel there as well.

I have not personnally visited Sovrenata but a friend has been going there over the last 20 years and loves it, they are pensioners obviously made a lot of local friends over the years and get booked onto the local pensioners trips and the Greek guide always transfers the locations in English although over the years they have picked up on little bits of Greek language and as her husband eats tipical English food only they cook egg and chip etc for him sounds a nice place and not far from the airport if you do it independantly.

Try Stoupa on the mainland. It's not too busy but also not boring and dead.Beautiful mountains all the way round and fresh spring water on tap all over the village.
