Hi Shirley,

Dress code: My wife says she feels a lot more comfortable in Luxor with her shoulders covered, when outside your hotel of course, as opposed to the more laid back atmosphere in the Red Sea resorts. For men jeans or long shorts are okay, its just a case of looking at where you are going to eat and wearing what you'd feel comfortable in.

I've been to Denderah on the Lotus boat, but when it was run by The Novotel. It is a great trip and , of course, the only chance you will get to see a depiction of Cleopatra on the temple wall. The chances are, that as with most buffets on most boats, you will be allocated space at a table with others on it. Being Egypt, if you wish to be alone when eating, you could always try a small tip and a word in the ear of the Maitre D', which will normally work wonders.

Not been to Luxor in October but I would imagine the sun goes down around 5.30pm.

It's two years since i've been to Luxor the last time and things evolve so quickly that i'd hesitate to recommend places to eat. I do hope that as you are staying in The Winter Palace, whether Old or New, you will take the time to try their restaurants. There is so much history in that building, enjoy it!!

Hi Shirley V,
Hopefully if I have got these images uploaded OK it will give you some idea of the boat that takes you to Denderah. It is as carrot says the 'Lotus' or 'Le Lotus' to give it it's full title. It is a very relaxed and laid back day cruise, nothing formal. The food is provided by the hotel itself so it is quite good. It used to be called the 'Novotel' but it has had an upgrade and a name change, it is now the 'Iberotel' As you come back after the temple visit you will be sheparded (as in the picture) into the dining room, but just do your own thing and sit down where you want, athough part of the fun is in meeting other people, you will be surprised how friendly everyone is on a day cruise. You soon get to know people.
Eating out in Luxor is for me a bit of a let down. There are some nice places but as a rule they don't seem to have much ambience. I personally do not think that the food is that great but that is just my opinion. It is quite edible and you can have a good night out but it does not rank high in my best countries to eat list. The quality of each place seems to go up and down, for example 7 days 7 ways used to be really good but the last time we were there it was pretty obvious that their biggest selling point had gone. You used to be presented with a good big plate of basic but very tasty food, now although the food is much the same but the plates have got a lot smaller. We have had some excellent meals in 'Snobs' and as of last June I would highly recommend the place to you, however when you go, it could be rubbish. :(
'Jems' was a big let down the last time we were there and a particular Nile side restaurant on the Corniche that we visited was abysmal. Most of the hotels are quite good but a bit predictable. I love Luxor but would have to say it is a bit limited when it comes to really good dining out, but who knows you may be lucky. Anyway Luxor is all about ancient Egyptian splendor and there is plenty of that. Enjoy your holiday :D

Shirley V, don't forget that Ramadan starts 23rd September so it's more respectful to be covered up when out and about! Have a great time!

Hi Shirl. Hope you will love Luxor as much as I do, we've been twice this year and would go back tomorrow. There's so much to see and do, I felt better with my shoulders covered especially when visiting tombs and temples. You will find the locals helpful and very friendly. We found a tip os 5 Egyptian pounds which is about 50p was very acceptable. Enjoy your holiday, I'm very jealous.

hi
we've been to luxor twice & loved it.as said the resteraunts arent anything really spectacular but you can get good cheap meals at a few places. we went to the kings head pub a lot, 7 days, sheraton italian & indian (although both can get very busy & service can be a bit chaotic esp in the italian). we also spent a lot of evenings in pub 2000(i think its changed its name though i'll try & find out. pub 2000 is off the main rd through luxor (look for a little sign to the left if your heading away from the roundabout near luxor temple) the rd to it looks a little dark but its only a short walk & the locals are all v friendly. we also ate at murphys bar which was good too. we stayed at st josephs hotel both times & although we never ate in the resteraunt everyone said it was good. st jo's also has a rooftop terrace bar/snackbar - good value food with fab views over the nile well worth a visit daytime. we also went to the bar below 7 days 7 ways resteraunt which does good snacks.
also if you go down to the river front near luxor temple theres a promenade with a great little spot to sit & have a tipple or 2 - cafe metro, they also did nice pizzas & things. they have loads of comfy chairs & tables outside, cant miss the spot its where all the huge cruise ships park in luxor.
if you go up th karnac temple (bout 5 mins in a taxi from main luxor) theres a small cafe/resteraunt as your walking in to the left called king tuts or something like that good spot for a beer, just make sure you find out the price before you order as our first trip there they tried to overcharge us, but the second time despite that we went back & had no probs at all, not sure if it has new management as we didnt see the guy we'd argued with the prev time. dont bother with food there though as the service is VERY erratic - a group of americans left when we were there after waiting 1 & 1/2 hrs for a plate of chips. beers fine though
have you thought about a day trip to cairo? we went our 1st trip & it was very reasonably priced flights, personal tour guide & minibus to ourselves for the day. we booked through a local travel agent in luxor & im sure it was just over £100 each & we had a fantastic time.
our second trip we did a 3 day trip to abu simbel & aswan through the same travel agent & that was very reasonable too (flights, hotel etc) & fantastic to see another place in eqypt. if you do a search on this forum theres several threads on the trips.

as for clother i felt completely comfortable in luxor in strappy tops & cropped trousers outside the hotel. the only place i did cover up when i left a resteraunt/bar was in aswan where the leering was really over the top & i thought my husb was going to end up in a brawl as the steam was coming out of his ears on several occasions as young blokes would walk 2 paces in front of me staring at my chest saying hello hello even though we were holding hands, and i have to add this was staring at my chest which was covered with a cotton jacket, i think a strappy top may have caused a riot there but luxor was much more relaxed esp around the main drag where the hotels are.
any other q's please post or pm or if you pm me an email address i can try & draw a map for you of the pubs resteraunts etc as im not brilliant at explaining where they are. :)
