If you are staying in Funchal I'd be tempted to go self catering - there are some great restaurants and they are reasonably priced. £10-15 a head for a load of food and wine. Day to day products are similar if not cheaper than the UK. Wines, beer and spirits are cheaper.

There are lots of good restaurants around the island in some dramatic locations.

We've had friends stay who have said it's fantastic and only 20 mins to Funchal centre and 10 mins to North coast .
