Cheaper option is to buy bacon eggs tin tomatoes etc and make your own breakfasts.Find a place roasting chicken(not every day), combine with fresh salad for afternoon snack, bottle of wine. pay only for evening meal if still hungry.
But there again your on holiday, who wants to go away to cook?
I always compare prices to home, nothing is cheap any more and we all have different standards. What suits one is no good for another.
Please disregard David's comments which are hardly designed to help you enjoy your holiday (David, you might like to explain how your reply in any way answered John's posting)
If you shop wisely you can eat very well at a very low cost.
A baguette at Caprabo (in Santa Ponca) will cost you about 70c (50p for David's benefit)
A Kilo of tomatoes will cost you maybe 1.60 euros (60p a pound David)
A Kilo of cheese can cost as little as 6 Euros a Kilo
A bottle of wine will cost you from 2 Euros
A pint can of San Miguel will cost less than a euro
A packet of 20 cigarettes can cost as little as 2 euros (1.50 sterling)
Apples, Oranges, Pears, Grapes, Bananas all for less than 2 Euros a kilo
Do not try and buy breakfast to cook at home (maybe a box of cereals and a pint of fresh milk if you have a fridge) but eat out and enjoy a cooked breakfast from as little as 3 euros (Magalluf prices).
Santa Ponca will be quiet from next weekend, as I understand it is already strating to close down, but Caprabo will be open, and there is a good Bus service from Santa Ponca to take you to Peguera, Magalluf, Palma Nova and Palma itself for variety.
The weather is patchy at the moment - it rained heavily this morning, but it's now sunny and warm, and that's likely to be how it will be next week, maybe even a little better.
Hope this helps, and have a nice Holiday.
Cheers
Adam
I find that on my visits to Mallorca things are not so reasonable as we expect, ok perhaps portions may be bigger but if you want quality wines and spirits then you pay. You live there and get a living from the visitors to the island in the licenced trade. Ok Mercadonna , Carrefour and the like are very comparable to home. My comments generally in answer to John were not to expect such great value and as he has to live at home to base his costs on that and if he does find things cheaper then that is a bonus. Pipefitter says that a pint cost him 4€ £2.67 for your benefit, I did'nt say it Pipefitter did.
I don't mind you not agreeing with me but try next time not to give your opinion for my benefit.

Have to agree David. Majorca is not cheap but if you go expecting to spend what you would at home, any less is a bonus. Can get a pint for just under 2 quid in my local (just on my way ).
Adam, the majority of English visitors who are self catering would be looking for products with which they are familar at home ie named brands, in some of the smaller supermarkets in Mallorca the prices for those are horrendous and far in excess of what they would pay at home.
Have a good evening my dear.
David,
I am not being patronising to Adam, the purpose of this forum is give an opinion which you may or not agree with, Adam is a professional who evidently gives a lot of visitors to Mallorca pleasure and information which they find very helpful. My original posting on this subject was how I see things on Mallorca pricewise some may agree others not. The Mallorca Daily Bulletin reported recently on rising restuarant prices that is their opinion.
Ok thats enough folks. Please keep it friendly.
First Kath, I shall keep my response non personal. However I find it intensely annoying when people with a little knowledge, post on here stating things as fact, when in fact they are only opinions. Nothing in my reply was an opinion, it was purely fact that I thought that a new holiday maker might find useful. The fact that John is asking in advance suggests to me that he might be a little concerned about the cost of eating both in and out, and I purely gave him an indication of what the cost of food is, at a Supermarket which is in the resort he is visiting. In truth some of those prices are on the high side, and if he were to shop at Carrefour or Al Campo in Palma the prices would be lower still.
I did not contradict Pipefitters prices, even though the price of a pint in Magalluf (where I live) is about 2.50 euros or less, substantially lower than the 4 euros mentioned. However that is the price in a bar, and a frugal holidaymaker can buy local canned or bottled beers much much cheaper than that.
I post on here regularly and try to avoid giving opinions, because as David rightly say they are subjective. Therefore by giving fact no-one can contradict you unless they believe you are mistaken.
My initial posting gave factual prices, all of which are substantially cheaper than the price of similar products in UK. The posting was meant to give John an idea of what he could buy good quality food for. Obviously if he goes out and buys Heinz Beans, Fray Bentos Pies, Newcastle Brown ale etc he will pay substantially more, but we have to credit people with some common sense, and not to insult their intelligence.
David suggests that the purpose of this forum is to give opinions. I accept that there are occasions when this is relevant with Hotels, Bars etc, but John has recently joined the forum, and I stand by my initial stance that David's posting was not helpful, but more of a broadcasting of his opinions. If he wants to start a new thread on the subject of high prices, then fine, but to hi-jack John's thread was un-necessary, and in my opinion (yes my opinion) misleading to John.
If he then wants to lower the tone by lambasting me, and trying to be funny at my expence, then he can suit himself, I don't really care.
Back to the topic. John I hope you have a nice holiday, and that my little contribution has been of some use to you.
Cheers
Adam
Ive just come back from magaluf and even thou we went half board we did compare the prices of things there to here, especially my son being his first time abroad, it does pay to shop around i bought a jar of nescafe coffee the 50g jar and i was chanrged 4 euros for it, didnt think much at the time untill i went in another supermarket and it was like half that price lol
Went by your place, a kareoke was advirtised. Not our scene sorry.
Manos and Pachas live entertainment 4.00 euros a pint but thats English branded beers.Unless I was singled out as another Brit tourist
For eating/drinking out we all know places in England where you can get a bargain pint but it is not like for like. In Mallorca if you go to even the smallest, cheapest bars, the glasses are cold, the beer is cold, the tables are cleaned after each customer, the ashtrays are clean etc. In Leeds there are 'continental style bars' in the city centre centre but you certainly don't get beer for £2.00 a pint! and even there, you are lucky to get a cold glass and clean tables!
Also the quantities and strengths of the drinks. In Mallorca you pay up to 4.50 euros (usually less) for a branded spirit and mixer but it is a long drink with a bottle of branded mixer (again a nice cold glass). Remember the lager is also stronger - I believe Estrella is as strong or stronger than Stella - I know I tend to drink Shandy because the lager is too strong for me. Try shandy the Argentinian way with Fanta orange - it is really refreshing during the day!
As you say, you get varieties of price within the same town, let alone different parts of the country.
This is not an advert, since there are places where you can buy drinks cheaper than us (what year were you here Pipefitter - the Double Tops been closed over a year, and we have Live Entertainment every night, followed by Karaoke), but we sell Carling Lager at 2.75 a pint (I mean a pint, in a pint glass) and Strongbow Cider and Worthington Creamflow at 3.25 a pint, which is about 1.90 and 2.25 sterling respectively.
If you drink at a Miner's Welfare Club in South Yorkshire you may find those prices expensive, but try buying similar drinks in Brighton or Bournemouth or Newquay (all of which are about 1000 miles north of here, and normally a little colder and wetter than Majorca) and I think you'll find our prices compare nicely.
I don't understand people belly aching about the prices, when they choose to travel up to 1500 miles on holiday, choose to buy branded British products, and then complain that they are not *cheaper* than in UK.
I've got a really good idea for people who want to buy British products at British prices - holiday in Britain. Oh I'm sorry I forgot, you wouldn't get you cheap fags and booze then would you?
Ever hear the expression about having your cake and eating it?
Having said all that, I don't want to give the impression our bar (or any other bar for that matter) is full of whingers - we find that 99% of our customers are perfectly happy with our prices, they come on holiday for a good time, and they return year after year - we've just had our best week of the year, at the end of our busiest month we've ever had, and overall we're 50% up on last year.
Back to the topic John - your holiday will be what you make of it - you can eat and drink, both in and out at reasonable prices, or you can get ripped off by buying expensive British branded products at extortionate prices. I'm pretty sure that you're smart enough to shop around, give some of the locally made products a try, and you'll have a great holiday.
Cheers
Adam
My original post was to give John Bee an idea what I was paying 1week ago.
No belly aching from me.If I need to pay extra for good entertainment Ill pay it.
I know this is way off topic but we were in Greece in August and were paying between 5 and 6 euros for a short and mixer . Cheapest thing to drink is local wine, ouzo etc. I just have what I fancy, obviously not as many at over 4 quid each . I know you are paying for surroundings etc but you wouldn't pay that at home (perhaps in a nightclub). Love from the depths of South Yorkshire - where you can get a decent pint in good surroundings for £1.90 . Gx
I'm amazed that we never have any commercial breaks on here!
Some of the restaurants geared only towards tourists offer this, but for excellent food of fair quality and large portions, choose a venue frequented by the Mallorcians and you will rarely be disappointed.
Most of these menus cost between 8 and 12 euros, representing very good value for money. In addition, many restaurants offer an early evening menu for 15 - 20 euros. If you have car you will find a huge variety of places to eat reasonably. In Santa Ponsa there's a good one on the lower ground floor of a hotel directly overlooking the water on the marina side. Can't recall the name! Thomas's near Mercadona in Palma Nova is unquestionably popular with locals and expats and offers a decent supper for 14 euros.
Whatever else, have a great time.
