The currency in Malta is still Malteese Lira in cash and they are in the process of switching to Euros.
As for taking money... Travellers cheques is one of the safest ways to take money.

If you have a Nationwide account then just use one of the ATM's as there is no charge
we`re going to malta in sept so would we be better takin euro or lira then.
