Glad to hear you had another great cruise Gramgill. We were considering booking Legend of the Seas, but opted instead for the Sea Princess as I really fancied trying a Princess cruise. So many ships and so little time (and money).

Hi
Hope someone can help. We are sailing on Mariner around the Western Caribbean next Easter and I am booking trips on line. My husband is feeling very brave and wants to on the Dragon's Breath zip line - I'm a coward but I would like to watch. Does anyone know if this is possible or do they only take participants on the trip?

Also we quite like getting dressed up on formal nights but don't want to take posh frocks and a tuxedo if we will feel out of place. Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks.

Thespian- take your evening wear, the formal nights are well attended and lots of glamorous people wearing their finery. It's a wonderful ship, lots of WOW factor, specially the main promenade.
For the the zipline on Labadee, have a look at http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=570658
You can watch from the comfort of the bar! I think that's where I would be...

Many thanks emedia . Will start dieting to get into sparkly frock! :P Sooooooooo looking forward to it - never been on such a big ship. We have only sailed with Thomson and Ocean Village. We thought we'd stick to the RCI excursions as we don't know the ports. We would welcome any top tips!

Speaking of which, any advice about the tipping? Are you expected to tip on top of the 15% added to the bar bill and the tips added to your on-board account? :?

The drinks have 15% gratuity included in the price. You don't have to tip in addition unless you want to.
The gratuities for your cabin steward and waiters are discretionary, but I always pay them, and extra to the cabin steward as we find they are so hard working and pleasant. I love RCCL, the staff are just wonderful, there is nothing too much trouble for them.
The best excursion I have done in the W Caribbean is at Chankanaab Park in Cozumel, we did the Royal Swim with dolphins - you can book thru the cruiseline but you will pay a lot extra- we booked direct with http://www.dolphindiscovery.com and just got a taxi from the pier to the park for $10 and then paid admission to the park separate- $16 pp cash only. It was an expensive day but very thrilling. The Royal Swim was $139 each if I remember right.
I just went to Cozumel last week, I love it. I did some shopping at the Forum shops then had lunch at Pancho's Backyard (delicious food and cute place) and then went to Margaritaville for a very lively fun time.
The only excursion I have taken at Labadee was the JetSki tour of the island, you follow the group leader around the coast and he narrates at various points when you stop. It was fun and interesting. We usually just have a lying around in a hammock on the beach day there- it is beautiful. They have lots of loungers and all the water toys, water trampoline, slides, floats, snorkeling equipment, jetskis and parasailing, pedalos and kayaks. While you are busy they are cooking a nice BBQ lunch and bringing foofoo drinks around, it's a lovely day. Of course they have the zipline!!
Grand Cayman means shopping to me, jewelry in particular- duty and tax free and of good quality. The big excursion there is swimming with stingrays (not for me) or beach days, the 7 mile beach break is usually the most popular. Georgetown GC is a nice town, you can take a tour or just stroll around and shop, eat.
I don't care too much for Jamaica, although it is beautiful, you just get pestered to buy weed or whatever they're selling ALL the time, but if you are going into Ocho Rios then the big attraction is Dunn's River Falls that's a must and it is slippery fun. Makes for great photos...You are climbing up a waterfall in a chain of people, guides take you up. It takes an hour or more so is pretty vigorous but wet fun . You can book ship's tours or use someone like Phil Lafayette or Peat Taylor, they both are used by Cruise Critic members all the time and come highly recommended. Just google their names and you'll get their sites.
These are all HOT resorts, even at Easter you will find it very hot to do much other than a little sightseeing, then get into some shade or water/pool somewhere . At least I do.
I don't think I've ever been so excited as when I first saw Mariner of the Seas, I was bouncing off the walls,it's such a beautiful ship and the main promenade is fantastic, be sure to go to the first night parade and get a place by the bridge for the best views (by the Pub)- whatever you think about ice shows do NOT miss the one onboard, the special effects are wonderful.
Don't miss the Quest Game for any reason, it's hilarious.

Thanks for your helpful reply. Getting near now - can't wait. Could you please give me an idea as to the weather in the evenings? We went on a cruise around the Red Sea last Xmas and it was freezing at night! I was totally unprepared and had left warm clothes at home. I don't want to pack little pashminas to find I needed woollies!! Thanks

You won't need any warm clothes at Easter in the Caribbean. Daytime temps mid 80's to 90 and evenings probably mid 60's to 70F. It never gets cold. They just have two seasons, the wet and the dry- you are in the dry season.
The only place you might feel cold is on the ship, if air conditioning bothers you, then bring a pashmina for your shoulders. I am never cold but I have heard others say so.
