bigstu,

You get an odd one but it's not a big problem. It's such a dry country at that time of year that you might not come across any.

My chemist here recommended vitamin B tablets which apparently change your sweat and make it less attractive for the mozzies. Over there they recommend a lemon spray which is readily available (also helps to keep you cool).

I wasn't bitten at all, my OH was bitten once - just before she applied the spray!!! :think

Never had much of a problem with them, in all the times we have been we must have only had about 4 or 5 bites between the 5 of us :tup i swear by Avons skin so soft dry oil spray, the green one, woodland fresh i think its called.

loulou,
you are bang on re the skin so soft from avon! my "poor" :D other half chris, used to get bit all the time no matter what he used - until about 3 or 4 years ago when he started using the avon stuff after he read in the paper that the army used it!
hes NEVER been bit since!
bless him!! :D

I am a virtual magnet for the little blighters and when I get bitten, I react really badly and invariably need to get antibiotics, etc. However, this year, I got two bites, both on my right hand and that must have been at the airport or shortly after arriving at the resort. I religiously smothered myself in the Avon SSS for the rest of my holiday and didn't get a single other bite the whole time - although hubby and son did collect quite a few.
Trust me, I'll be covering myself in the stuff right from the word go next time - before the little horrors have a chance to strike! :tup

Where you have still water be it on the ground or ponds you will get the mossies as thats where they breed, Steer clear of still water areas.
I also use avon ss and when I use it I never get bitten, But as always I forget the one night and inevitably get bitten, Fortuntely I get no adverse reaction.

Hello All... I normally got to marmaris in september/october and the mozzies normally have a huge feast on me the minute i step off the plane, so decided to fool them this year and go in may :tup ive been told its a bit cooler so does this mean there wont be as many at this time of year... im fed up with spending a fortune on the repellents only for them not to work, ive tried Buzz off, that lemon water stuff and also the jungle formular stuff if the answer is yes to mozzies in may "what repellent" do you use?

thanks

mitchellclr,

I've never experienced problems with mozzies at any time in that part of Turkey and I can't say I've really seen that many. Anything with deet in is normally the best repellant.

You may do better to but some repellent when you get there, you can get one called Off by Johnsons, which is very good or the other one in called Sinkov. Also try spraying some lemon cologne over instead of perfume as they tend to like perfume but can't stand lemon!

there is one called expedition i think, that contains alot of deet, we got ours from the internet.....

in turkey we just use the stuff from the shops there.....sinkov, or OFF....we use shower gel with lavender in, the natural source one, and if we do get nipped, i put lavender oil on the bite......

My daughter reacts badly to bites. The first year in turkey she got bitten twice on one leg by fish (she felt them do it so we know it was them), and ended up on antibiotic tablets and antihistamine creams. We thought that was bad, but last year she was bitten by something else (she hadn't been in the sea by them so assuming it wasn't fish ;) ) and it itched slightly for the rest of that day, by the next morning her leg was swollen and she struggled to walk. We got her to the nearest chemists and got her 2 different creams and the same antibiotics as before.

Obviously we don't know if these are mosquitoes (to be honest I haven't actually seen more than one in turkey, over 3 visits), no one else was even bitten! The point of this post is really to say the stuff from the chemists, if you do get bitten, is excellent and really quite cheap. They are also so friendly, although the one my daughter lies (a lovely old man, used to see us everynight walking by and would come out to check it was improving) didn't speak too good english - we got one of our friends to translate for us (he was helping my daughter walk to the chemist anyway).

Will have to try a different kind of spray for her as the one we were using clearly didn't work for us (the smell is almost too foul to use anyway).

Hiya thanks for the replies... cloclo im very much like your daughter, the swellings that i get from the bites are quiet embarrassing, resembling the elephant man at times :yikes ive been to marmaris a few times (normally in oct/sept) and my girls have never been bitten (probably because the mozzies get enough meat from me) :think
i will try the different brands of repellent thats been mentiond here... :cheers
