Hiya,

I'm going to book a last minute holiday to Morocco next month, most of the deals that come up are for Agadir, has anyone got experience of it? Whats it like?

What I was really looking forward to are the Souks, but are the ones in Agadir miles worse than the one in Marakesh?

If so, is there any way to get (cheaply-we're students!) from Agadir to Marakesh?

Are there many organised tours?

What is the transport like?

Thanks in advance!

Do remember that it will be VERY HOT when you are travelling so set off as early as possible in the morning, and lie low in the heat of the day. Drink loads of bottled water!

I cannot advise you on Agadir, having not been there, but Marrakesh is well worth the travel. It will take between 3 and 4 hours, either using a bus or a Grand Taxi (Mercedes - shared ride, supposedly equal prices between passengers!!). There is no train service. Hitching is not a good idea over there - and will probably frustrate you. The driver who might pick you up may still require payment!

You could try Marmara travel for help and advice - they handle the vast majority of incoming French visitors, and I have found them most efficient, friendly and reasonable as regards prices. You could try their website at http://www.marmara.fr or use Google to find them, and this should give you at least a contact agency in Agadir. Nearly all of their employees speak English, and you will find them helpful and worth listening too, even if you're not French.

Remember that this is a different world - you will enjoy it if you can remain openminded and pay attention to your food hygiene and take care of your belongings! BOTTLED WATER ONLY - even for doing your teeth!

I found the Rough Guide invaluable for planning my holiday and giving me info as I visited - probably worth your investing in a copy!

Morocco is classed as a very low risk for Malaria, and as such the World Health Organization recommend preventatives such as repellants. By all means take anti malaria tablets if you feel the need. Vaccinations recommended are Hep A, Polio, TYphoid and tetanus. Diptheria, Tubercolosis and Hep B are sometimes recommended too.

Hi

We are also going on the same dates.
We were there 4 years ago and loved the place really good for kids & adults.
Loads of entertainment all day & night and also a good variety of food plus excellent service from the staff.

Found some really good pics of the place at:

Maybe see you there...

Hi Poppy!

Yes, it will definitely be hot in Morocco in August - actually VERY HOT ... so do stay out of the sun in the middle of the day and drink loads of BOTTLED water.

Where is the hotel? It might help if you could tell us, and who's going ... in as far as what you are hoping to do ....

You will have a lovely time, but please be careful not to burn. Morocco is not a member of the EC so you will need to make sure you have adequate medical insurance. I am not expecting anything dire to happen to you - but it is very hot and a whole new world - both Toasted Mallow and I have been independently to Morocco this year and it has left lasting impressions on us both - good but slightly crazy (Wacky Races driving, loads of couscous and kind and friendly locals).

Have a good time, but please make sure your water is bottled, even for doing your teeth!

Hi everyone, I am just researching my holiday to Marrakech in October and you all seem to know what you're talking about! Thanks for all the really useful info that i've already jotted down! There are just a few things I would like to ask...

Like I said, i am going to Marrakech in October, how much planning should I do before going? Is it one fo those places that are easy to find your way around once you get there? I have been researching places to stay and doing online quotes, etc it will cost about £400 for a double room for 2 weeks, but looking at other people's experiences you can get riads for about £4 per night? Is this true and if so do you book in advance or do you just find somewhere when you arrive?

Sorry if this is a bit long winded but i just want to make sure i know what im doing before i get there!

There is also the thing about not drinking water, only bottled, this is a bit dis-heartening because i wanted to try the mint tea stuff, is this also not safe to drink???

Umm i think that is it FOR NOW! I would appreciate any help, tips, etc, anything you think might help! Thanks in advance!!!

If your tea is boiled, it is safe to drink. Otherwise, bottled water for everything - not expensive.

There are always people who claim to have found bargains such as riads for £4 a night. To trust them or not is your perrogative. I would suggest that you book a conventional hotel in advance (eg the Agdal), and then will not be hassled by touts or anyone else.

Do you speak Arabic? If not, prebook. Yes, you probably want to find somewhere in the middle of the souk, something 'traditional' and authentic, but Morocco is essentially a poor country, and you may not find that their idea of home comforts conforms to yours. I'm not talking air conditioning and a TV but communal showers and 'turkish' toilets and VERY rough loo paper if there is any!!

Many tourist hotels are in the Villes Nouvelles, or modern quarters. This is not a bad option ... you may need a pool even in October, and whilst the souks and centre of Marrakesh are mindblowing, it's good to have a retreat away from the whirl of activity and the noise.

The Rough Guide can give you ideas of suitable accommodation. I don't think that £400 is unreasonable for a fortnight's accommodation. Do remember that wages are very low and you will need to tip to get the best service. And start keeping 1 dirham coins for your visits to the loo!! It is NORMAL to pay, and take extra tissues for personal use.

You will have a great time, but if you want to travel independently it's possible as well as you keep a very close eye on hygiene (Morocco is NOT in the EC so is NOT covered by the E111) and give yourself a bit of time out to try to sort out the amazing images that your head will be reeling with!

Looking to late October and any advice on resorts at this stage would be helpful. Looking to laze around primarily so must have a good beach.

thanks
