Please will you let me know what you think to these apartments as we are thinking of booking for next August. Also who did you book with as I can't find them in any brochure. I know Thomsons are going there this year but don't seem to be next year.
Good Points:
They are right next to the beach and some have a sea view.
The apartments are a good size with a large lounge, two double bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and balcony.
There is a good choice of pubs and eating places nearby (The Railway Inn towards Salou is excellent for food and friendly service).
There are small supermarkets nearby selling everything you might need at reasonable prices.
They are a good base for sightseeing. There is a bus stop outside of the Maritim Princess hotel next door with regular buses going to Barcelona, Tarragona, Salou and Port Aventura, and the apartments are about a 20 minute walk from Salou railway station. (Having said this, the public transport in the whole of the Salou area is very good).
As a resident of the apartments you can use all of the facilities of the Maritim Princess Hotel.
Bad Points:
We arrived at midnight, picked up the apartment key from the Maritim Princess and were then left to spend twenty minutes wandering around the (lonely, dark) complex trying to find the entrance and our particular apartment. The lighting is very poor until you find your way around and discover the outdoor light switches!
The apartments are not really in Cambrils and are not in Salou - they are on a long road between the two. If you want to go to the centre of either you will need to use some form of transport or face a long walk.
The apartments look like they were equipped and decorated in the 1970's and have not been updated since. The furniture was dated and in poor condition. The double bed was very uncomfortable, the wardrobes smelled musty, the toilet seat was chipped and tiles on the bathroom floor were chipped, (the bathroom is tiled in dark brown tiles with dark brown woodwork and is not at all welcoming). The equipment in the kitchen was old, some damaged, not very clean and very basic. The gas cooker looked like it came out of the ark.
Although the apartments were cleaned regularly there was a constant smell of drains in the bathroom which made you reluctant to go in there!
(Having said all this we may have just been unlucky with our particular apartment as a couple of other people we spoke to said that their apartments were lovely and very clean (although the Thomsons rep did say that they were all decorated exactly the same way)).
On balance, we would not go back to these apartments. We did however have a really good holiday visiting Cambrils, Tarragona, Barcelona and Port Aventura and still finding time to laze about on the beach.
We booked through Thomsons over the internet
Thank you very much for that very comprehensive reply. I think that has definitely decided us against it as, apart from everything else, we did want to be in the centre of Cambrils. Any recommendations?
Sorry don't know of anywhere in Cambrils to stay. Most of the apartments/hotels in Cambrils cater for Spanish people as it is a popular spot for them to holiday in. Most of the ones Thomson etc say are in Cambrils are actually on the outskirts. The nearest one is Cambrils Princess which is about a twenty minute walk into Cambrils but is a nice hotel, the Maritim Princess is approximately a 45 minute walk from Cambrils and 10/15 minute walk from Salou yet is advertised as a hotel in Cambrils so be careful when choosing.
