Yassou, kalispera!
My husband and I are in our mid 30's. We've been been to Rethymnon many times in May and August and absolutely adore the place. We even walked the Samaria gorge the other year!! Returned to Rethymnon (my so far our personal favourite) in October 2006 and couldn't believe how fantastic the weather was. Luckily we were there the week immediately before those dreadful storms when several people were killed!
We're now looking for a new resort to try for October 2007 and we're both very interested in trying Matala during the second week in October. A bit concerned that Matala will be all but closed down for the winter by then? Anyone been to Matala in early October that can give me some advice? We're not party animals and like a good beach, sight seeing, walking, GOOD FOOD and bars where we can befriend a few locals and watch a good sunset with an Ouzo and a bowl of olives and embarass ourselves trying out some new Greek words we've picked up in the summer!!
Regarding things closing down, yes that is a possibility. Officially the tourism season ends with October. So some of the accommodation, bars, tavernas might be getting ready for that.
Thanks for the advice. From the small amount of research I've done so far Matala sounds exactly what we are looking for. Several historical sights quite nearby and good walking, beaches and excellent Greek & Cretan food. Just worried that Matala is quite small, so if tavernas and bars start to close down for the season the atmosphere in the evenings may not be very good. Do you know if Matala just a tourist resort or a Cretan village that has life all year round like Aghia Gallini?
I'm glad you tried the Samaria Gorge. Which way? Uphill?
No, DOWN HILL! Seemed a bit defeatest to only do half of it! REALLY glad we made decision to walk the whole gorge, it was breathtaking. Locals told us it'd only take 3 hours .. ha ha!! We couldn't walk properly for about four days afterwards which caused great amusement to all! My husband was glad he'd done it but said he'll NEVER let me talk him into doing anything like that again LOL! I'll definitely do it again in a few years time though. HIGHLY recommend it.
that is normal in Crete now days.
as you said second week of Oct it will not be ''dead'' but it will be a bit quiet. Its a good thing though that you are not thinking of July/August.
Well according to what i believe it doesnt matter 100% where you are and when. Its all a matter of good company with those that you go with.
Even if you will not find everything open, if you still enjoy other things like walking etc you will be ok.
