I am interested in Mauritius for August / September, but don't know much about the place.
Is there a tourist office who could send me some stuff out, or can someone recommend a good brochure?
I need to know which areas have the best beaches and if possible are less windswept.

Try Kuoni, Virgin Holidays or Hayes and Jarvis. I went with Hayes and Jarvis. Mauritius is a fabulous island. You'll find fabulous beaches all around the island. The eastern side of the island is on the windward side, the western side is in the lee (least windy).
