Dear All
After hearing about the lady who was arrested and put in prison in Dubai after traces of a medicated substance - prescribed by her GP in UK was found in her blood. Apparently this substance is illegal in Arabic States and you can be arrested for possession even if the substance is in your body not just on your possession.
As we are going to SHS in September with my mum who takes soooo much medication i am a bit worried about any regulations like this in SHS.
Any advice or links regarding this would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Any idea What drug
I know a friend wandered into a pharmacy in Sharm and was offered Class 1 drugs as Over The Counter medication
whereas I needed some Sudafed (the divers friend) and had to haggle the price down (wish I'd brought more in the UK)
You can even get Viagra OTC there so ........................
A phone call to the consulate in London may help.
Perhaps you can you get a letter from her doctor stating that these are prescription medication?

I am a PAGAN and they viewed my Shakra crystrals with suspicsion until I said they were IMPORTANT to my religion
they didn't bat an eyelid at my prescription medication though
would love to know which drug they supposedly don't like and also WHY? did they do a blood test results from those normally take at least 12-24 hours to get --so.................???

May i ask what the class 1 drug your friend was offered over the counter ?
what if you didnt know it was a class 1 drug and bought it ? would we recognise the name and be able to refuse it ? im just worried as i wouldnt know what i was being offered . Or even what symptoms your friend had and what they were looking for so to watch out as to what theyre distributing.

This is a link to the story
Madcaravanner, were you actually stopped at Sharm Airport and asked about your crystals and medication?
Codeine, a banned substance in U.A.R.!! I think the T/O should start warning people about that! Fat chance though, they can't even get the Egyptian visa info right!
Only I couldn't buy Co-codamol tablets (Paracetamol and Codeine) in any pharmacy in Sharm last year! Got a lot of shaking of heads and some funny looks and ended up with some rather nice berry flavoured soluble paracetamol tablets instead.
Is anyone aware of a problem as this could potentially affect anyone with OTC medicines purchased in this country such as Boots Co-codamol and Solpadeine tablets?
That poor woman
The only thing i was going to buy there over the counter was there version of immodium as some people say they have better or more effective stuff so im sure i wont end up with anthing illegal like whatever madcaravaners friend did . phew! quite worrying though to think of that woman.

May i ask what the class 1 drug your friend was offered over the counter ?
They were Anabolic Steroids injectable sort
AFAIK
you can get codeine but you need a doctors scrpt in Sharm it's not OTC
dont think i need to worry , but does anybody know the name of a good immodium type medication that you buy in Sharm over the counter and i can ask for it by name , id like to buy some when we arrive to have if needed and after the last few worrying comments would prefer to know what to ask for
Cheers all

Must remember that in future (I'm one of those Solpadeine junkies that's been highlighted on tele recently)
We did buy some Imodium type stuff in Sharm once, but can't remember the name of it. All you need to do is tell a pharmacist the symptoms, he will roll his eyes, nod sympathetically and get you exactly what you need.
It is true though that the remedy obtained locally does seem to work better than the one puchased here and taken with you. Anyway Debs, you are NOT going to need any!!!!!
Regards,
Roger.
Ive never had a problem anywhere but sometimes my husband does which is usually due to the amount of local beer he drinks but i like to have some handy when away on a day trip or something. Thanks for the info .

Perhaps we should be checking our passports for errors before we go! I just wonder what the error was....they don't say anything about it.
If you are a foreigner and are carrying this drug with or without a prescription the authorities have been notified and are aware that this drug is sold outside of egypt.
I hope this helps.
whilst diving in dahab a few years ago, we were able to buy ephidrene (speed) over the counter in the chemist. Not really relevent to the topic but...
I ask as my dad is on alot of medication and just want to triple check what he can/can not take before we go
Thanks for your help

As far as the codiene goes i wouldn't personally worry about the low strength over the counter co-codamol (8mg codiene 500mg paracetamol) but would probably make sure I had the box for the prescribed varieties (30mg codiene 500mg paracetamol).
Benzodiazepines such as diazepam (valium) alprazolam, lorazepam can be brought over the counter in egypt but again in the uk are prescription only medications and should not be held without prescription in uk.
