Your holiday does sound expensive though but the cost of the meal sounds about right.
Sorry to hear you didn't have a good time
Hi, I'm off to Son Bou in 2 days!! I can't wait to get away but i'm really worried about all the jelly fish that there seems to be ?? has anyone been in the last couple of weeks and can put my mind at ease at all???
I feel I have to agree with you on this one. We stayed at Arenal de Castell in the Aqua Marina, drinks are really expensive and meal times were like a cattle market.
Minorca is not for me either. Far too expensive, not much to do, too quiet and we too had lousy weather.
On a plus point we did hire a car for 5 days but 3 were enough as the island isn't that big, and we did find the roads a lot quieter than other spanish resorts.
But hey, each to their own and that is just my opinion.
LOADS of jellyfish so be careful!!
Lovely island, lovely weather most of the time and I would go back at the drop of a hat. It's a great chill-out holiday destination. We prefer to visit the island at the tail end of the summer season when it's quieter and the beaches are not so crowded so each to their own. The introduction of the Euro is the main problem behind the rising prices and it has affected prices all over Spain but when we've been the cost of eating out is still cheaper than here so time of year is obviously a big factor in what you pay.
Is it hot the sea water?
The Mediterranean Sea will be lovely and warm at this time of year
Having said that I have done the cheap holidays in the past and now that I don't need to do cheap holidays I love Menorca
Stay in a villa in a quiet location - hire a car and cherry pick all the best restaurants - do a bit of research on forums like this etc and you will find plenty of great places to eat
I have never been to a resort where driving is so easy - no problem getting to any resort, beach or restaurant.
To the family who posted this initially I think if you are going to spend £2500 on your self catering then you can obviously afford to eat out like we do - but you need to research the best restaurants etc to get the quality - there are loads like you describe where for £40 plus etc you will get a very boring meal - just avoid them - if you are prepared to drive you will easily find 14 great restaurants !!
I went to menorca for the first time last year (july) to confortel anabel cala galdana. It cost £900 for three of us h/b for a week and was paying about £1:30 a pint which is not bad when u pay £2:30 plus over here. The food was fantastic spoilt for choice generally overall holiday was fantastic. Im going to cala'n bosch next month and looking forward to it. Bulgaria is prob the cheapest but they are joining the euro soon
I've got to agree with jonah126.We came back last week from Ciutadella but we went to Calan Bosch to eat on a few evenings. The restaurants there did not seem to be any more expensive than in the UK.For example I had a fillet steak with chips and veg at The Bahia for 10.70 euros(£7.60). Menorca is more expensive if you are buying provisions at the local shops. If you are staying anywhere in the Calan Bosch area it is worh trying to shop at the Diskont Hypermarket which is on the Calan Bosch to Ciutadella road just before you get into Ciutadella.Typically 2 litres of Coke 1.29 euros(0.92p),2 litres Sprite 0.99 euros(0.71p) and most importantly San Miguel for 25p a bottle.
Meals...yes they can be expensive, depending where you eat. Personally eating out in good restaurants is part of my holiday and I would rather pay more for a nice meal than choose the cheaper option of 'everything with chips'... Menorca does offer lovely cuisine but as in England you get what you pay for. Why not be adventurous and try something different every night! How un-British would that be? LOL.
Weather? We go June and August and have been very lucky. Ofcourse, on a cloudy day the stark reality of how little there is to do indoors abroad does hit home, as it would do anywhere. My advice would be go to Mahon shopping or take the kids go-karting...all sunbathing and no play makes for a dull holiday anyway!
Hire a car, explore the island, the hidden beaches, Mount Toro, Mahon Harbour, steer clear of the resorts around Ciutadella as you get some holidaymakers around there that make you cringe to be British...head instead for Son Bou or Cala Galdana.
For anyone who has young children like ours...7 and 5...trust me, they will love Menorca and want to go again and again...!
Hi i am just back from Menorca and i like the original poster would not go back. i also found it expensive and not much to do. We stayed in Cala n Forcat and for kids maybe 7 - 8 years old fine but we had a few 12 - 15 years old and not much for them to do. We stayed at Los delphin apartments and they were basic but good and very central. But not a lot of shops and the stock in the shops looked as if it had been there for a while i thought the shops were dull and dusty. i also missed a nice promenade and beach to walk along. We however did not get bad weather in fact it was to hot for us we were the the first 2 weeks in July. The good points were at night it was nice and quiet a very family place no young drunks about we were a party of sixteen our hotel entertainment was bad but could have been better if they had used the profit they made from the bingo to pay for it. An example of prices my son loves wearing footie tops my nephew was is salou and bought a barcelona strip for 24 euros we paid 47 euros they were both replica strips.
We paid 21 Euros for a decent Barcelona replica shirt in Cuitadella-so you were well and trully ripped off.
Yes I agree, having visited Los Delfines I can say I was very surprised such a resort existed on Menorca - grown men in full football strips...pitiful . Luckily the rest of the island doesn't reflect this in any way, we steer very clear of that end!
You could buy an original shirt for that price in Cala n'Forcat. If you want to support the black market in iffy kit then whatever you pay will be too much!An example of prices my son loves wearing footie tops my nephew was is salou and bought a barcelona strip for 24 euros we paid 47 euros they were both replica strips.
erm...no I wouldn't actually, I'd sell it on Ebay. And I have no problem with football shirts...on footballers...not on pot-bellied, lager swigging Brits who have never kicked a football further than 10 yards. Perhaps you had to be there to see it!?
em not every body that has a football shit haas a pot belly put it this way i will never go back to menorca with people like you who think they are better than joe blogs no wonder i amn going to benidorm were all the so called larger louts go
Hi i would like to correct my original post and say it was a full strip i bought for 47 euros, but my nephew also bought a full strip in salou for 24 euros. And my son is only seven so not a pot belly lager lout.
Can we please draw a halt on the football shirt topic please.
