Mexicana suspends Gatwick flights
Mexicana has suspended its London Gatwick-Mexico City service from today due to serious financial problems.
It is one of 15 services suspended from today, with another three suspended from tomorrow.
The airline, which filed for bankruptcy protection last week, originally said its flights would be unaffected.
But in a statement issued yesterday, it said its financial situation has deteriorated substantially in the last week "due to a series of events that have strangled the cash flows".
It said IATA's decision to suspend its BSP sales channel had forced it to suspend the sale and issuing of tickets indefinitely.
"Other sources of revenue have either dried up or are being retained by financial institutions following the company's recent decision to file bankruptcy proceedings," the statement said.
Mexicana said it was determined to make an effort to continue operating.
"It is hoped an agreement will be reached with union leaders and that additional resources can be obtained to secure the financial viability of the carrier," it said.
The airline's management had been in talks with unions over a possible reduction in staff wages of around 40%.
Mexicana, whose troubles were compounded by the swine flu crisis and recession, has lost US $350 million since 2007.
In its bankruptcy petition it listed debt of more than $1 billion.

Just another casualty to the credit crunch and the recession, like Sun4you and now the latest firm to go bust Kiss Flights

I think the operator has been bought out by a consortium and the pilot's union.
All Mexicana flights are now reportedly grounded indefinitely,
I hope this serves as a warning to Unite that if you push to hard, it can cause firms to fold and leave all the workers without jobs. They would rather take a pay cut than lose their jobs im sure

Perhaps they would have done but according to the link provided by David that wasn't what was on offer - the new investors wanted to make ALL the cabin crew redundant and re-hire only 1 in 4 of them. Lord knows how they proposed to provide anything approaching like an acceptable service to passengers with those sort of reductions in staffing! I'm not sure that I would ever want to fly with an airline, and certainly not longhaul, that thought that it could manage with only 25% of the current cabin crew.
I don't know anything about trade unions in Mexico but in the UK the 'union' IS it's members and under UK law the days when union officers could get away with imposing strike action or non-acceptance of an offer from management upon its members without a proper ballot of all members are long gone.
