Having just returned from Singapore and not touching the mini bar in the three nights we were there, its made me think. Why do some city hotels charge such excessive charges for their minibars?
We like to come back to the hotel room at a reasonable time and relax with a drink while we discuss the day we have had. In Singapore we just brought in beer and coke( and used the duty free ). In Bali, we thought nothing of using the same from the minibar there as they were only a little more than you would pay in the shops. We did the same in Thailand and in Vietnam. Surely a small profit for hotels is better than nothing at all? And it makes for happier customers.
Same with laundry- when in Bali we just put things into laundry without thinking. It still cost more than if we had taken it outwith the hotel - but we got a charge of £10 for a heap of washing we put in when in Ubud. Well worth it. The same amount in our Singapore hotel would probably have been about £60. Obviously the cost of living varies greatly between Singapore and Bali but I'm thinking more of the percentages that hotels want to add on to the shop prices.
Is it just me or have others had the same thoughts?
It's not just city hotels, its most hotels. I've only stayed in one hotel in Thailand where they were charging prices similar to those outside - then I was happy to purchase stuff from the mini-bar. One good thing about the serviced apartments is that they expect you to bring your own stuff in.
Some hotels (not the HI) we've had to stand up and be firm when presented with mini bar charges that we haven't had... some hotels just can't help themselves and like to try it on. We always check our bill and find many errors like one time in Fiji they billed us twice for the same meal
we found similar in KS Geri. They did stock the minibar but only a fraction over the shop prices- result was that we used the minibar all the time and they obviously had not paid shop prices for the drink so they made a profit. Result- both happy. Same was true for our Ubud hotel and also for Saigon.
We found similar in HK Fiona - we never touched the mini bar it was just too expensive.
Never worried in Bali, but in some city hotels they really do go voer the top with prices- theres always a small shop somewhere close by though
