We love to have a January holiday in Europe but we are finding that more and more hotels are now closing at that time - particularly in Spain and Portugal. 2 hotels that we loved in Majorca are now no longer open in January and the lovely one we stayed at in the Algarve a few weeks ago has now decided not to open next January either - not really surprising as it was only about 10% full! The euro/sterling rate and the fact that people are travelling out of the eurozone has probably got a lot to do with it. Not that long ago it was cheaper for people to spend 2 - 3 months in Spain than to stay at home - not the case now I'm afraid.
We are now looking at Malta again - although we can't go to the hotel we prefer as it is now only with Saga!!!
Pippa
Totally agree Pippa, I've found this as well. The hotel I usually stay in (Algarve) closed this year for most of January and when opened at the end of January it was virtually empty. I did hear they may close for 3 months next year. It will be interesting next year to see what happens with both hotels and flights.
