ive got the same problem. im off to Goa for a month in November and when i arrive at Mumbai i have to wait at least 12 hours for the connecting flight to Goa.
If you type in Mumbai hotels in google you should find what your looking for.
Noggin pm'd me saying that there are quite a few hotels within 15 mins of the airport.

I stayed at the Hotel Midland, clean, basic, they are 15mins from International airport and 5 mins to domestic, price is for B&B and airport transfers, I also managed to barter the price down as they are for 2 people sharing a room, and I was travelling solo.

hi all we booked last year after looking on the net and when we arrived in mumbai got a shock because the hotel looked nothing like we were led to beleive from the pictures although must admit things turned out fine it was just that the two restaurants the hotel boasted about were down the road on the same block and so were some of the rooms !! anita

I got stuck overnight there when a Goa connection was cancelled.
There's a hotel desk at the airport arrivals where you can go and book something near to the airport on the spot. Barter the price and they'll include taxi transfers so you don't have to mess about yourself.
