Roma,

Alcohol bans usually occur on the day of the election and the day of counting.

I think this year the elections are on 3rd of March.

We will be there then and I am not in the slightest bit concerned.

Never had aproblem getting a drink on election days.

Remember this is Goa.

I have heard that the dry days are from 18:00hrs on 1st March - 18:00hrs 3rd March for the elections and then again on 6th March (Midnight until 18:00 so just during the day) for the count. I'm hoping that this is correct as this is when I will be there, what with this and the 10 bed per shack saga!!!!

We were there a couple of years back and the elections were on. I think the alcohol ban only lasted 3 days but as Papa said we managed to get a drink ok. The only place we couldnt get one was in a restaurant in the North. It was funny actually, we had been out for the evening and the guy in the place offered us all a drink at the end of the meal, so you can imagine our faces lightening up, then he came back and said "Oh I am so sorry I forgot about the alcohol ban" Damn and blast :(

A lot of the bigger hotels were very strict about the no alcohol rule 2 years ago. We were at the Marinha Dourada and the bar was closed for 3 days, no beer at Mackies although quite a few bought plenty from the little off license next to Mojo's the day before the ban started.(even Mojo's was closed). There was also the option of the mini bar in your fridge, to be honest I can understand the rule being in place for Indian nationals but it seems daft to punish tourists but mind you India are tops when it comes to daft rules......Keith

Always been able to get an alcoholic drink during elections but it comes in a tea cup instead of a glass :shush

Basically just be discreet......

What a sad lot some of us Brits are that we cannot go a couple of days with alcohol.

There appears to be some truth in what has been said we have just moved to Majorda and the little bar we go in only had kingfisher strong yesterday and said they where having problems getting supplys, they have been told by the police to close at 10.30pm, also the wine shop is closed today, however the shacks and restaurants don't appear to have any shortage :(

I read on Tripadvisor that South Goa that all "liquor shops, bar and restaurants, food joints, shacks, etc located in South Goa to be closed by 11pm from January 25 up to February 5 and strictly by 10pm from February 6 till the completion of elections."

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Close-liquor-shops-bars-by-11pm-from-Jan-25/articleshow/11607690.cms

It seems you won't be able to get a lime soda or sit and enjoy a late meal in South Goa for the best part of 6 weeks as everywhere will be closed.

So it's not just people who fancy a tipple who will be affected (or possibly be classed as 'sad lots').

I wonder if North Goa will jump on the (band)wagon and decree the same.

Hi all
i cannot see what the problem is closing at 10pm/11pm..... :que
For quite a few years when we started going to Goa...EVERYTHING was closed by 10pm....
You could walk down the middle of the main road in Calangute at 10pm and not come across a single vehicle...
Very quiet.... :tup

Solution.....start your evening earlier.... :cheers

Received email today, off Mr Hardip Paul, owner of JJs Guest House telling me his manager at the guest house informed of the alcohol ban this morning, he wasn't specific with times, and dates,he apologised for the situation, and also said due to him having a large communal area for alcohol consumption, it is going to be a disaster for his new restaurant. (Friends i presume), iv'e asked if he could let me know times and dates of ban, and i will put it on here if or when he does. :yikes

Can anyone else be more specific about dates/times.

Thanks
The Preacher
