The French have brought in a law effective from 1 February which forbids smoking in any work place. This is the latest development in a national no-smoking campaign. It is still unlawful to smoke in public places - hospitals, airports, railway stations, shops, schools, cinemas etc.
On the hotel/restaurant/cafe front, non-smoking will be introduced gradually as decided by the owners, but from 1 JANUARY 2008 France will become a NO SMOKING country.
Fines are currently 65€ per individual caught and 130€ for the person who owns the place where the individual was smoking. Not only are the police vigilant, but locals are denouncing offenders too! On the positive side, the government are funding various anti-smoking medications (gum, patches etc) for those who have decided that this is a good time to give up.
Visitors are politely reminded to look around them for smoking/non-smoking signs before lighting up!
I heard this on the news yesterday but thought the full no smoking policy was going to be around October time
The The BBC world news web site posted useful information about Smoking curbs, the Global picture on 31st Jan.
