HI
I'm new to this forum and hope somebody can give me some advice. I recently booked 5 nights accomodation in New York through Opodo. The price they quoted was £656 inclusive of taxes. when i checked my credit card £833 had been charged to my card. I rang Opodo and they claim they only took £656, it must be the hotel that has taken the extra amount for taxes even though they stated tax was included in the price. Has anybody else had this happen when booking accomodation to America. Do i just accept this or take it further with Opodo as the final price i agreed to pay through them was £656 not an extra £177. In the small print it does state that some hotels may charge your card for any extras on checkout. thanks for any help

No do not except this, if it was to include taxes then that should be the price. I would have thought it was down to opodo to find out what has happened and then put it right. We have some very knowledgeable people on HT and im sure that they will point you in the right direction.
Your card issuer will be able to tell you who deducted the £833, so you will be able to find out who to contest this extra amount is ......... for starters. Once you have established this, you will be on the road to sorting it out. And you can then tell your bank that this extra amount has been deducted without authorisation, and ask them to reimburse you once you know who did what. GOOD LUCK.
Yes, just to back up what the previous poster said, get in touch with your credit card issuer and tell them that you did not authorise the amount that has been applied to your account and they should then be able to deal with the dispute for you.
you booked through Opodo, not the hotel. You cc statement must state who took the amount out- what does it say? Did you get an email confirmation of the booking?
how shocking !!! good luck, sorry never had any issues like this ! thank god....
You booked through Opodo it was to them you gave your credit card details. If it came out in one lump sum then it is their responibility. I do not think you can have two different companies take two amounts out under one transaction? and at the very same moment in time. Contact the credit card most are 24hrs and insist on opening a dispute they try and get you to wait 28 days first or to try and sort it out yourself. You can always stop it if Opodo refund with no hassle.
If the answer to either of the above is no then how did the hotel get your CC details?
Your contract/transaction was with Opodo and, unless they have passed your details to the hotel, which they do not have the authority to do, only they can have charged your CC.
As has already been advised you need to contact your CC supplier and advise them of a possible fraudulent transaction.
Use of the word "Fraudulent" will get their attention.

cc company say it is only one transaction, made payable to the hotel novotel even though it was opodo i gave my details to. They have asked for a copy of my booking confirmation then they will look into it. I also phoned Opodo pretending to be a customer wishing to book the same hotel, asking if there would be any extra charges and was told NO all taxes were included. After then explaining i had already booked accomodation and had been charged extra the lady backtracked saying she would have to double check. she then rolled of lots of jargon saying i had been slightly over charged but it should still of been more than the price i agreed to pay. She said the information on the website must be wrong, and all taxes may not be included. she was very understanding and nice and seems willing to help........we shall see tomorrow ,if she phones back like she says . She said to send a copy of my confirmation to them by post with a letter explaining the situation. wish i could of taped the conversation when she said YES all taxes are included in the price. Obviously the information they are giving customers when booking holidays is wrong so surly it is them who is at fault.

It should tell you on the opodo site if taxes are included or not. Some of the hotels i looked at for amsterdam stated quite clearly 5% tax to be paid on departure from hotel. Others stated to include all taxes. It must be some where. Do you not have a booking reference from opodo where you can bring the details of the booking up on their website, this should give all revelant infomation.
I can spell relevant
I do not think it is any thing to do with taxes at all. If they made an error on their site tough it is their fault. They are a big enough concern to know that they cannot get away with this. Tell them you are getting in touch with the tradings standards.
If it was a mistake on their site they are within their rights to charge the proper payment.
But at the same time they should have contacted you first, and not just taken it
Have you an invoice from Opodo for the booking and did you pay them?
What does it say concerning local taxes etc?
Did you provide CC details to the hotel or was there an arrangement that the hotel would bill via Opodo any extra charges /costs that may be incurred?
In a later posting you say it is only one payment yet said originally you had booked with Opodo. In that case why is it to Novotel and not Opodo who are billing you?
Why did Opodo pass your CC details to the hotel?
With respect to all who have posted we are a little short of information on this.
My interpretation is that a booking was made via Opodo with payment being made by the poster via Opodo to the hotel by means of CC details furnished to the hotel via Opodo with the posters agreement.
The poster had agreed a price with Opodo yet the bill from the hotel exceeds the agreed figure.
Or have I got it wrong.

I think as we have seen on this site before if a booking is made for a certain price and you have received a confirmation email and invoice confirming this and a means of payment has been provided then that price has to stand.
I,ll try to explain exactly what happened.
I booked with Opodo for the Novotel hotel. The site said all taxes included.
As far as i was aware i was making a payment to opodo. CC company says payment says Novotel hotel.
Opodo site does say some hotels require extra tax but payment will be charged on checkout.
As far as i was aware i booked a hotel that said TOTAL PRICE £656 includes all taxes and thought i was paying Opodo.
I have booked with many similar sites & never had a problem.
I have noticed the price has gone up on the Opodo site.... now around the £800 pound mark
I have posted my booking confirmation to Opodo and the cc company which states the price i agreed to pay and that all taxes are included.
Just a bit worried that i have misread something ......or over looked something .
I wouldn't of minded so much if it was only a small amount but it's an extra £35 a day. Even if certain taxes were not included they wouldn't amount to that much bearing in mind it does say taxes included.
maybe if anyone gets chance to look on the Opodo site .....see if you would assume like i did that the total price is what you would be paying i would be grateful. our dates are 15 may for 5 nights.
cheers maxine
