What part of the Orihuela Costa would you like to know about?

Playa Flamenca.....La Zenia......Punta Prima........La Florida....etc?
All these places are quite close together, but with a little more info I may be able to help you more.
For instance....What sort of activities would you like to do? Will you have use of a car...etc?

Hola,

I have lived in La Mata for a few years now (about 10KM north of PF), and either drive through or past Playa Flamenca daily.

If you don't have directions to PF from the airport, email me back and I will give them to you.

I take it that you have already booked your hire car, but on the off chance that you haven't, try to get a deal where you pick up a car with a full tank of fuel and return it the same way. It works out cheaper. I can try to find out who offers these deals if you want me to.

PF is an OK base for your holiday; you will probably have access to a communal pool and only be a walk from the local bars and restaurants. However, I would recommend that you avoid these places as by comparison to Spanish areas PF is very expensive to eat or drink, and the food is generally not up to much. That is why I asked whether you had a car.

The main coast road that you will no doubt be using a lot is the N332, going south will take you towards Cartagena, and north to Alicante and Benidorm beyond (about an hour and a half drive). The nearest large town to you is Torrevieja. You will be situated on the other side of the N332 to the beaches, and it is probably farther than you would want to walk. The N332 can get busy at the time that you are visiting, but nothing like the traffic jams in England!

Personally I avoid the crowded beaches near to PF and prefer to use the ones at La Marina, the drive will not take you long. I can give directions if you want.

I note that you will have 2 teenagers with you. There is plenty to keep them occupied. There is a huge waterpark just north of Torrevieja, opposite Carrefour (shopping centre), and visible from the main road. You can take boat rides from all the local towns, if you decide to do this then I would advise not to use Torrevieja marina as the ride is bumpy, drive north to Santa Pola and you can take a trip to the island of Tarbarca, or other nice trips are available from Cartagena marina.
Drive north of Alicante and you will come to TerraMitica theme park, plenty of fun for the kids.
In Torrevieja itself there is a submarine that they can explore, and a daily street market where you can shop. There is also a Saturday street market in PF, so parking may be a problem on that day.
There are a couple of Go-Kart tracks on the N332, the best one is quite close at Punta Prima. Adults can have a go to.
Other attractions are the Busot caves, El Algar waterfalls, Rio Safari, Huerta del Cura (Botanical Gardens) Historical trip to Guardalest and lots more. Directions and more ideas by request.

Eating out .Again, I can recommend dozens of restaurants in all price ranges, and all types of cuisine, so let me know what you are looking for. The same for shopping, let me know what bargains you are after and I will try to help.

As far as football is concerned, I am not sure if mid July is too late for the regular season and too early for the World Cup, but there are plenty of bars with big screens. Are you looking for Spanish or English bars?

I am sure you will have a nice time; please feel free to email me back for further information.

Hasta pronto!

thanks so much for all you have told me. yes we have a map from the airport but no we have not sorted out the hire car yet and would love any recomendations esp as there are 5 of us. the boat ride sound fantastic from santa pola. torrevieja is a place that we have found on the web and looks great we had not heard about the submarine but will make sure to explore... my son would love it. we enjoy most types of dishes so any suggestions would be a great help. also could you tell me...is playa flamenca quite flat ie ok for walking? thanks again for your time.

Santa Pola is about 45 minutes north of PF towards Alicante, Cartagena the same distance south. Both places are worth a visit for shopping, eating out and boat trips. You may well spot naval ships including submarines using the harbor at Cartagena.

I have posted information about restaurants, trips, etc before, but to save you searching for it.......

In contrast to the UK, Chinese food is cheaper than Indian. To be honest, although I like a curry I refuse to pay the prices here. If your taste for Chinese is hot, then the best restaurant has to be 'Big House' in La Mata (about 10 Km from you), a meal for 4 including drinks would not cost much more than 50 Euro in total. See the difference?!!!!
Slightly blander food can be had at the 'Dynastia' at Punta Prima (nice decor and gardens).
For the biggest T-bones outside of America you will have to try Federicos. Take the N332 north towards Alicante, at the roundabout just past the San Jaime hospital turn right and follow the road for about 1Km, the Chinese restaurant at the traffic lights does a Menu del Dia for 5:50 Euro (Including wine), further on the left is Federicos restaurant, and a few doors down Federicos cafe bar. The restaurant is a little posher, but the food in both places is excellent. Enormous T-bones for less than 15 Euro. At the very end of this parade is Magani's bar, beer 2 Euros a pint .and sensible (Spanish) measures of spirit.
Past Magani's you will come to the Torre del Moro, turn left here and just past the Cabo Cervera hotel is Don Marianos restaurant, and a little further Barlovento, these two restaurants, along with Maison de la Costa (Torrevieja centre) and La Finca de Eduardos' (Nr. Campoamor) should be visited on 'special' occasions (ie. nights that your friends are paying!). To shorten this post I will give directions if asked by email. La Torre is good for lunchtimes, take the road directly opposite the entrance of the hotel Masa (nr. Torre del Moro). Menu is 7 Euros, with wine.

Nights out. On the N332 head south ignoring the areas of Cabo Roig and La Zenia (punterville). Try the bars and salsa clubs at Lo Pagan. Remember, things do not warm up in Spanish areas 'til late.
A dinner and show at the Santa Pola Palace could be worth doing as well. There is a casino near the Carrefour shopping centre.

Trips and sightseeing.
Torrevieja town"¦"¦Street market selling some reasonable stuff. Cafes around the square. Good seafood restaurant on Ramon Gallud. Nice marina. Submarine to explore.

Santa Pola"¦"¦Boat ride to Tabarca island. Nice beaches.

Elche .Priests Garden ( Huerto del Cura), take a picnic. Also some well preserved Arab fortifications. Nice old part to the town.

Also try .Rio Safari (zoo)"¦"¦The caves at Busot (amazing) Waterfalls at El Algar (stunning)"¦"¦A trip to Guadalest (historic) .Cartagena marina ..Alicante town.

Best beaches can be found at La Marina .nice sand, sea shallow for a long way out. No hassle. Large nudist area (if you are into that!).

Much has been said about crime. I will not dwell on this too much except to tell you how thieves operate and how to avoid being a victim.
The shunt .A car will deliberately rear end you, when you get out to investigate your car will get nicked.
Distraction .Somebody (usually a pretty girl) will engage you in conversation whilst her friend rifles your car, sometimes with you in it!
Opportunist Hire cars generally are not alarmed, neither are rental properties. Use bum bags rather than handbags and stay alert, even on beaches and especially in markets. Carry only what you need and hide the rest somewhere that is not obvious.

Playa Flamenca and surrounding areas are flat enough, so no problem walking about.

Car hire companies change their terms from time to time, so post back closer to your departure date.

Also, I am not able, due to the settings on this site, to send you directions in a Private Message. If you need any, again post back in a week or two when the problem has been resolved.

The World Cup final is on the 9th July (I believe), so by the time you visit there will be no football to watch. Plenty of bullfighting though!

hi zanadu :)

like others have mentioned i can highly recommend taking a trip to cartagena lovely town with a great port.
also a lovely city to visit is murcia great place to do shopping! it will take approx 30 mins to get there !
and one last place is la manga with a beautiful beach !

these are my opinions only and the reason i know about these places are that my father is spanish and these places i have family living there and we visit them nearly every year!

i can not recommend restuarants as we mostly eat at my families but i would say please try traditional spainsh bars for your tapas LOVELY especially squid fried in garlic and the spainish omlettes and the tuna fish salad with potatoes and mayo!

i hope this helps you

Thanks so much to Matchey and Lou26chris for your replies, i have been told about the resturaunts in the commerical centre i cant wait to give them a try. The spanish Restrurants sound fantastic . I have also been told to try the Emerald Isle. Can you tell me if it safe enough to cycle in the area for my 12 year old son? thanks zanadu.

Zanadu,

I have been to playa flamenca 6 times and think it is a great area, it seems a safe enough place for your son to drive his bike as long as he would be accompanied by an adult in case he got lost, the roads in the area are never that busy (apart from the n332 which is the main road), we have also a 16 year old son, he really likes the go carts in PFlam which are very good. the saturday market is also excellent for a bargain

hope this helps

Hi matchey,

There are tapas & raciones available at the Mercadona cafe in Flamenca Beach.

The Cafe-bar next to Hotel La Zenia have a great selection of raciones (including sea food), not sure if they do tapas portions.

La Taberna de Laura at Via Park do tapas & raciones, the Chorizo was tasty but I was very disappointed with the ensaladilla rusa and the chicken dish ( Pollo something or other).

To get the real McCoy you may have to try the side streets in Torrevieja.

thanks Dark Isle for the Tapas recommendations, will defo try

Zanadu,
the emerald isle looks good the pool is very nice with a waterfall (kids will like it), but havent had a real chance to spend alot of time their yet, hope to goto it in July. Also there is a bit of building work being done on a section of the beach at PFlam they are making a walkway to link it to Punta Prima(the next resort north up the coast), it will be a great walk along the coast when it is finished, hopefully it will be ready before you come out.

I drove last year for the first time, the drive down from Alicante is great as you pass all the other resorts on your way down to PFlam. I was a bit nervous at the start but after 5 mins it was fine, the roads are excellent some better that in the UK. I booked through INVALID URL have never had any probs. Try the sites below they also have a lot of useful info.
