Hi Jean - haven't stayed in Paleochora for a while (well except for election night last Septemeber and that's a whole other story!), but I can advise on the trips!

Elafonnisi - do it, the colour of the sand is beautiful, but it WILL be busy, try to keep away from the main sweep and pick a quieter stretch. Take a fleece, the boat trip can get chilly even in July!

Ferry trips - Sougia for the day is no problem- catch the 8.30/9.00/9.30 boat depending on the latest update to the timetable http://www.sfakia-crete.com/sfakia-crete/ferries.html#D and catch the 5.30/6.00/6.30 ferry back. Have lunch in the Omikron, not traditional Greek, but incredible chilled and don't be surprised if you find it difficult to pull yourself away, Sougia is one of my favourite resorts!

Loutro, not really that feasible, you'd have to leave on the 1pm boat back to Agia Roumeli to get the one late afternoon boat back to Paleochora. You could do a one nighter in Loutro Taverna To Limani has got some nice rooms above the Cafe Loutro.

You'll love it - last September in the space of 14 nights we did (by bus/ferry) - Heraklion -Loutro (6 nights), Loutro-Agia Roumeli (2 nights), Paleohora (for the bank, 1 night!), Sougia (4 nights) and back to Heraklion! PLanning on just Sougia and and Agia Roumeli in 2009 (with possibly a side track to Small Paradise near Loutro)

Enjoy.
