It's a bit "hit and miss", some ask,some don't.

I normally get cash out the ATM with debit card, saves all the hassle.

I don't use a credit card but use a debit card throughout europe and have never been asked to produce my passport. I can see why they may want to see it for secondary ID purposes. I never take my passport out with me, its always locked away in the safe, I wouldn't dream of taking it with me just in case they wanted to see it when paying for things. If they wanted to see it and refused to accept the card without it, I think I'd be taking my business elsewhere!

When my friend had her credit card stolen in Barcelona, we were told by the hotel receptionist that when you paid by anything with a credit card they should ask to see your passport, but the only place I had to show it was at the airport on the way home.

How about taking a photocopy of the passport ID page instead?

A photocopy of my passport was accepted as proof of ID in Las Vegas this year when I was cashing travellers cheques. Saved carrying the real thing around.

Another tip I read in the newspaper was to email to yourself important credit card nos., insurance references, passport nos., credit card loss telephone nos. etc so that in the event of disaster you could retrieve the info. by going in to your emails. Also take some out of date credit cards in an old wallet so that if you are mugged or robbed they get the duff ones.

Good one hbrac - will do now :)

just to add to hbrac suggestions
you would need to mail them to a web based mail ..ie hotmail as if they are on your isp mail you wont be able to retrieve if your in say spain

no offence hbrac but not the best idea in the world storing all your personal information on your pc anyway especially if you send yourself an email with the heading CREDIT CARD INFO

i have a usb pen drive to use in emergencies and the info is stored backwards  ..oh thats let my secret out now :D

Good point Lincoln Imp..I got those tips from the Mail I think. Anyway it was a newspaper of some sort...It did cross my mind as to whether anyone else could get the info though.Perhaps tel nos. of Sentinel and other card safe services and emergency nos. could be of value.

When we were in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago (missing it now!), we were asked for further ID. I didn't have any, but he accepted payment anyway! I've also been asked elsewhere a few times.
