We arrived on Sunday and immediatley headed for our usual shack, Johneys in the Goan Heritage area of Calangute We've been going there since Johney built it years ago on his return from working in the Gulf. At that time he was the only shack on that part of the beach and we've been with him ever since The shack was'nt ready but he had sunbeds out and drinks available,but no food. After a pleasant day yesterday(and a few drinks I went up to one of the boys to pay my tab, I thought it a bit steep but paid anyway, when I saw Johney about it this morning he told me as there is no food available you have to pay 50rps per sunbed to cover the cost of them being painted this year, but once the food was on we could have it free if we spent on food. I told him it seemed a bit harsh as I,d regarded him as a friend all those years but was then told if we didnt pay it others would. We moved on to The whispering palms and had a great day wth food and free sunbeds!. It was'nt the cost, as I'd leave a bigger tip but just another example of how success in changing some Goans attitude Later tht evening whilst walking down the main road in Candolim two different groups of taxi drivers shouted and catcalled at us as we said no thanks when asked if we wanted a taxi All in all a bad day fo us.I ve loved the Goan people since first I visited 50years ago but these last few years they seem to be getting to have the same attitude to tourists as you get in some parts of the Med Now I,m not saying they are all like that so dont rush in to say how wonderfull your shack owner or taxi driver is as I know most of them are great but I think success is changing some of them and not for the better. As far as Johney goes , he's now got interests in other shacks, an appartment block, shops and a bigger car than me!!, so I dont think he needed my 50rps for the paint for the sunbeds Alan
