We stayed at the Yalisacari Palace hotel nearby, which is lovely, albeit a little remote, but would warn you of a certain beach trader at Pelekas Beach, ie the guy in charge/owner of the beds available as soon as you hit the beach. Normally we would never question cost of loungers and/or food from the local traders who are simply trying to make a living from the short season. However this guy is unbelievable, a total cowboy. We stayed at Yalisacri near Pelakas in 2003 but in 2004 we went to San Stephanos - around the coast. We drove over to Pelakas because we love the little town, and we had a property to look at, but sure enough when we hit the beach at 4 pm our friend from the first bar was there with a charge of 30EU.
We love the Island, Pelekas is our favourite place, not far from Corfu Town or Aqualand, but really scenic, but even locals we speak to (owner of the Pink Panther pizza place - up on the Pelekas main road- (excellant place, fantastic views, great food) confirm this chap is certainly not helping local tourism. Make a stand and either avoid him, or question his costs. First time we got caught by him, lunch (two french baton's, one coke, one small can lager and some crisps) was £27!! Sad that I remember it, but indicitive of how absurd it was.
Enjoy Pelakas
Thank you for your reply. We are also staying at Yaliscari Palace. A friend of ours stayed here a couple of years ago, and he said it was lovely, but very quite, which we like anyway. We intend to hire a car. as we have never been to Corfu before, and have a tour around the island.
