I last went to zakynthos 7 years ago which was my second trip, and Im off again in five weeks time. I have always stayed in Kalamaki and going there again. The place is just fantastic, i understand it has recently undergone some development and continues to do so, however I am assured that it is still the most wonderful place. It is quiet, but enough to keep you occupied at the same time. As for bugs and stuff, I remember little lizards running up the outside of the apartment, and a few large flying things which looked like a cross between a bee and a stag beetle, I have recollection of maybe one frog, but only near a pond. Realistically, there are no bugs out there that you wouldnt get in any greek (or mediterranean come to that) area.
