Hi all,
Am off to Sao Jao on 16th August (got to get away from this rain!).
Anyway, for my husband and I and our twin daughters (10) this is our first visit to Portugal. We are staying at the Vilanova Appts & Hotel - can you recommend some restaurants/bars suitable for families and also where the best supermarkets are.
My husband is worried that we are not taking enough cash (looking at £1,500 exchanged into Euros) - is this enough for a 14 day hol?
Thanks in advance
As for restaurants one you could have a look at is one called Caravela it on the main road from the strip to the old town on the left, some of the best food we had was in here and it is not to dear, just past it is a very nice cake shop called Oura Dose all the locals use it and they have cakes to die for.
In the old town you could look out for two more we found to be nice and again not to pricey, O Tunnel just up some steps on the left before you go through the tunnel to the beach on the Rue 5 De Outubro, near the Tourist Office and another one on the same road but going the other way is one called Restaurante "O Catraio" we only found this one this year but went there three times it is only a small place but again one the locals use some of the prices are, T bone steak 13.50 Fillet steak 10.00 Pork chops 5.50 Chichen piri piri 5.00 soup 1.50 Grilled salmon 8.00 Swordfish 10.00 these prices are all in euros and they do have a small childrens menu and last of all if you do go throuh the tunnel to get to the beach don't have a meal in the restaurant on your right we had our duffer in here and the toilets were dirty and smell. as a bit of a help me and the wife eat out every night and had a starter/main/bottle of wine ( most house wine is about 7.00) and water and most times it came to about 30.00 euros.
Hope this is a bit of a help,
Dave.
Not been here for a couple of years but half way up the strip (heading towards Montechoro hotel) is a restaurant called "Silk". The food in there was fab and not expensive. The roast sirloin of pork with apple melted in your mouth. I believe it's their special on a Tuesday night!!!!

Would have thought your money would be fine for 2 weeks. Some quick prices for you as a guide -you may want to visit one of the water parks and Zoomarine (a great day out if you enjoy dolphins and sea lions!) and entrance to these is about 21 euros per adult and 14.50 per child.
Eating out - just as a guide - light lunches (omelettes, burgers, salads, sardines ) from 3.50 to 7 euros. Evening meals - it depends on your tastes, but main courses around 8-15, starters 1.50 to 4/5 and desserts 3-5. House wines from around 8-12. A lot of restaurants offer childrens portions, but if not you can always see if they will do a 'meia dose' (half portion). There is a good supermarket on the main road less than 100 yards from Vila Nova.
Hope this helps - I live in Lagos, so if I can help with anything else, let me know!
Look under restaurant reviews at the top of the posts. We stayed just off the Strip may/june this year at Vila Petra and I added most of the good and bad places we ate in. Most were around the Strip as we had a baby with us and never ventured too far at night.
Agree with Pat 42, Silk seemed busy at night, we only had a few lunches there but a nice place and cheap as chips. Think 1.50 euros for a large beer
Marachino supermarket at the Strip crossroads across from Linekers bar about 200 yards from your apartments. Paella restaurant joins the Vila Nova. We ate here ine night and it was great, others may disagree?
Check the reviews as there are loads there for the Strip. Say hello to Joseph at the Stones Bar if U drop in, top of the Strip on the right. Taj Mahal for a good curry opp Stones.
£1500 should be enough dosh, depends on what you eat and drink mind you
