I've done it both ways, first time on an organised day trip with the rep, including Tunis for the Bardo Museum, Carthage, and Sidi Bou Said and I think we might have been to El Djem on the same trip but I can't remember now as it was some years ago. Another time I joined up with some others from the hotel and used a mixture of trains, louage and taxis to visit Tunis, Nabuel and Sidi Bou Said. If there are three or four of you it might be worth negotiating to hire a taxi and driver for a day.

You must try and see the Mausoleum of the late President at Monastir as it is absolutely breathtaking. Monastir itself is worth a visit as it is a different atmosphere from Sousse or PEK and you can get the train from Sousse quite easily. I actually think you will need to seriously consider going back again next year as there is no way you will fit in half of what you want to do in a week. :rofl

Are you finding yourself becoming a little addicted to the Tunisian forum? Because I think I am! I won't be back to Tunisia until next year and still I find I can't turn on the laptop without checking out holidaytruths lol

Now that you mention it i think our trip included Tunis and the Bardo musem as well as Sidi Bou Said and Carthage.

Perhaps a bit strange but I found the cemetery beside the Bourguiba Mausoleum in Monastir visually amazing with all the white tombs / graves :que

You might like a look at the train timetable if you want to explore independently:

http://www.fahrplancenter.com/Fahrplan_SNCFT.html

You will find El Jem (same place but different spelling) on the TUNIS - SOUSSE - MAHDIA - SFAX - GABÈS - METLAOUI - TOZEUR section.
