Plaka is very nice and quiet. Some nice little restaurants on the beach front. Good fish restaurant! Small beach, think you would need a car though!

wish i could find a website with a photo that i had seen onces to show u the view from Plaka to Spinalonga. Go for it. nice idea. U will need a car as not easy to move around from there (some people do walk though from Plaka to Elounda). Food is good from what i remember in Plaka but dont expect big restaurants or something fancy.

There are two Plakas that we have been to. The one opposite Spinalonga, very quiet fishing resort near Elounda and the other is along from Chania towards Rethymnon also very quiet. Both very nice.

we have been in the beginning of september and it reached 36 degrees. too hot for even me. We have seen families with little babies on the beach and they always keep them under the umbrellas and covered up and they dont seem to have any problems, they might get a bit of heat rash though so it might be worth looking into how that can be prevented. I am sun sensitive and it takes a good few days for my skin to get used to it so stay in the shade a bit more at first.

Hi, we are also booked into a villa in Plaka in June. From my research so far, it looks great for a family holiday- just as well as we're going with our grown up son, our daughter, her husband and 2 year old grandson. It's about 1.5km from Almirida, the nearest beach resort - a quiet resort with a sandy beach. About 4km away is Kalives which is a bit bigger and apparantly has all the shops you need. Plaka itself has a couple of mini-markets and tavernas, including one that comes highly recommended and I've heard good things about the food in Almirida. We are hiring a car for flexibility, as there are lots of places to visit from there, though I suspect our daughter and family will spend most of the time between the pool in the villa and the beach.

We know the area a little, as we visited Crete about 10 years ago and briefly visited Kalives. Chania is a must to visit, a fanastic place to wander round the little backstreet shops or eat watching the sunset over the harbour. The villa looks lovely, let me know if you go for it!

Oops, just noticed the date of the original post which is quite old! If anyone has anything to add about Plaka or Almirida, I'd be interested anyway.
