Planning to go to Cambodia for the first time over Xmas and New Year time.
We intend to fly to KL, just stay one night to rest and then fly to Siem Reap for 4 nights. Then plan to have 7 nights in Sihanoukville (is this too long) just to chill out (we like chilling out), this will be over Xmas.
We will then have 3 nights in Phnom Penh and finally back to KL for 2 nights before flying back.
Is this too long in Sihanoukville and not enough in the others, also I am not sure on how easy it is to get from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville.
Any advice would be appreciated.
I think you are spot on with Siem Reap and Phnom Penh durations, been to both and loved them , Sihanoukville is on my wish list, I think a week would be about right, Sheppo off this forum has been there so maybe she will help ?
We did something similar for the first part of our holiday. 1 night KL, 5 in Siem Reap. We're glad we had 5 nights in Siem Reap as it allowed us to do the trips in to the temples in a leisurely style as we were jet lagged even with arriving for the day into KL. There are lots of temple sites to visit and some of the complexes are huge and require a good bit of scrambling about. Siem Reap is actually quite a nice place to chill as well as visiting the temples and other sites. Pub Street is a must in the evenings.
4 night's in Siem Reap I think is about right, but 3 night's in Phnom Penh in my opinion is to long but if you are 2 day's 3 night's then that would be OK. Sihanoukville is great if you only want to chill, again not alot there but there are a few trip's you can go on, there is more than enough restaurant's to keep you going, we spent 10 night's the first time and 14 the second and never got bored once, sure you will enjoy it. We will be going back before it get's spoilt maybe next year. Where you thinking of staying?
At the moment looking at Golden Banana in SR, Reef Resort in Snooky and Blue Lime in PP for accom.
Might also try and fit in some time in Battambang and/or Kep.
Sounds an amazing place to visit.
LOVED Bopha Angkor in Siem Reap (Shirley V recommended it to us...as she did Billabong in Phnom Penh)
I spent a month in Siem Reap working with an NGO. no more than 1 week is probably the best duration if you don't have something to get up and go to. See the temples, check out the markets and enjoy the cuisine!
Some great info here, I'll be in Cambodia for 10 nights in May and havent a clue what to do yet!
4 days Siem Reap - temples..floating village. Phnom Penh = S21 and Killing Fields. Pick up Mekong Express from Phnom Penh to go to Sihanoukville for beach/relax. 4 hours from Phnom Penh by the coach.
Thanks Betty, I think 4 days of temples might be overkill for me though!! How do you get from Siam Reap to PP? We fly into Bangkok and then out from there again to come home
We flew into Bangkok - wasn't sure if we could get luggage booked straight through to Siem Reap from Heathrow..but we could - if I had known I would have booked earlier flight from Bangkok to Siem Reap so had a bit of delay for internatl flight. Arrived Bangkok 06.10 and had booked the 11.35 to Siem Reap arriving 12.35.
1st day..having got to hotel by 1 o'clock (there for 4 nights) spent rest of day getting bearings etc....and had arranged with tuk tuk driver to pick us up at 8.30 next morning for temples.
2nd day - temples...Bayon..Baphuon...Preah Khan..LUNCH and rest...then Ta Prohm (Jungle temple)...another rest...then Angkor Wat. Back about 6'ish...bath/rest..out for evening.
3rd Day....tuk tuk driver took us to Tonle Sap...boat trip down river to lake. In the afternoon shopping at Old Market...silver/jewellery buying LOL.
4th day...Lazy day...walk to Palace Gardens/shanty town/museum..then tuk tuk to Old Market for more shopping..amber this time LOL! Aspara dancing at Temple Bar in evening.
5th Day ...back to airport to Phnom Penh at 11.55 and tuk tuk to Mekong Express office where we checked our backpacks in and went for drink. Back to Mekong Express office at 1.30..bought our return tickets and left for Sihanoukville at 2.00 (it'll be 2.30 if picking up from main bus station). Four hours down Highway 4..with quick stop for banana offering at temple for 'safe journey' from 'escort' on bus. Arrive Sihanoukville at 6 but taxi 'stolen' by another visitor LOL. No problems just grabbed another one and soon at hotel.
