I can't help thinking , this is direct retaliation for the accusations about corruption within the police, that scarlettes mother has made. she is of course absolutely correct. no doubt anyone who has been there several times will have seen the plain clothes police taking money from the shack owners, (whether they are licenced or not) in order for them to continue trading. we have also seen them beating up a beach seller girl, because she wouldn't (or couldn't) pay them. although some people may think they are the local mafie, this is far from the truth. they are council official and police.
BOB
We were on Candolim beach a week ago and the police raided and demolished several shacks, there were 15-20 of them just pulling parasols out of the sand, sun beds were being carried off, rumor had it that the police had paid these people to remove them? Some poor people were actually pushed off the beds as they were sunbathing!! Word spread quickly and all the shacks further up removed beds out of sight and we had to sit it out on the sand and wait for them to pass through. They were expecting them back the next day for a further sweep but it didn't happen. The mood at the shacks was not half as lively as it usually is which is a shame
I'm a bit unsure what really happened here. Were shacks destroyed, or just parasols and sunbeds uprooted?
What I saw was the shacks left alone but sunbeds and shade uprooted and carted off.Of course once everything had quietened down and money changed hands no doubt they were returned.
