What's Sea Safe - apart from something you most likely don't need?

Anemones are safe - even if you touch them (but don't). Sea lice - again not sure what you are referring to - some sea slugs (nudibranchs) are toxic, but unlikely to be a problem unless you set out to deliberately touch them (please don't - some can be quite nasty). Jelly fish probably won't be a problem either. Not unless thee are a lot about. Even then most just tingle and are fairly harmless really.
Some of the corals - eg Fire coral - is also quite nasty, so again look but don't touch. Remember all these things are living animals, handling can injure or kill them.

we did get some safe sea, its a sun lotion that has stuff in it to repel the above nasties...apart from Ian getting a tiny jelly fish in his mask and getting his nose stung(!) we didn't get stung...but unable to say whether that was due to the safe sea or not!! I probably wouldn't bother again to be honest... :D

Well let's think...
It won't repel anemones or coral since they are stuck to the rocks, it won't repel jellyfish cause they swim so slow you tend to collide with them rather than them getting you, sea slugs crawl slowly on the seabed or rocks so it'll be no good for those either and the sea lice mostly crawl around on fishes..

What else was it supposed to repel?

Am I beginning to sound cynical yet? Does it sound like I think it's a waste of money  :?:
If it's any good won't it scare away all the things I would like to see when I'm snorkelling?

Sorry - it's been a long day at work...

Thanks for the feedback, it's beginning to sound like a gimmick sell.

Not having been to Egypt before I don't know how harsh the sea life can be.

If anyone else has bought some of this stuff and has any views on it, I would like to hear it. Don't want to waste money on something I really don't need.

Many thanks.

Hi Stemma, when my family and i were in Sharm 2 years ago(august) there were masses of jelly fish which just suddenly appeared, and were there for two days but nobody was stung and we didnt have any special preperation.
I think it is the ones that are found in Portugual that one has to be careful of, so dont worry :)
Reply
Not necessarily in Portugal but yes, the Portugese Man 'O War is a mean beast - whopping long tentacles with a very nasty sting...

Now let's wait for one of the pedants to log in and tell us all it's not strictly a jellyfish...

Sea Safe = rip off

In the Red Sea you observe a couple of rules

1/ Don't touch the coral - if you do it dies
2/ try not to touch any living thing in the water
3/ DON'T feed the fish - doesn't matter how many Idiots are it ruins the bio sphere of the sea

The PADI ideal of leave nothing only bubbles is a good ideal to have

and if you can get a bio degradable sun lotion all the better no oil slick when you swim

Just get out there and enjoy yourselves

Hi
Hi sorry in advance of what I am going to write, but what exactly is in this "sea safe" stuff, presumably if it repels it must have some sort of toxic whatever in, so it isn't going to be very fish, coral, plankton friendly is it? I think the wildlife in the Red Sea are having enough of a problem coping with us all going into their "home" trashing the coral etc.etc,
Has anyone any idea about this stuff, or am I just being a tad over sensitive re my own personal paradise?

Hi,

was in Hurghada last week snokelling around the reefs.

I was stung by a jellyfish (none of which are poisonous) and it hurt at first (think of a very nasty stinging nettle) but the pain went away within the hour. All the other advise on here is great, heed it.

Checked out that link from Gray...

Sea Safe isn't a repellant it's supposed to relieve the pain of a sting from jellyfish etc.

I'd go with Snorkelbabe's comment about not polluting the sea any more than necessary and take some Lanacane (or similar) in my beach bag to use ...if I get tagged...

Check out the "Colloidal Silver" offered in Gray's link. It just reinforces what I believe most of us are thinking about the whole range of products. Totally useless!
