Flight Only / Airline and Airports

Discussions relating to flight only, airlines and airports.

Tolsti,
My understanding is that Garuda (the only Indonesian airline that flew to the EU) dropped its last two EU routes (Rome and Amsterdam) in 2005. Thus the ban is fairly meaningless other than to warn people that the EU considers Indonesian airline companies to be unsafe.

Other airlines added to the list that did fly to the EU are TAAG of Angola and 5 Bulgarian cargo carriers.

Cheers,

Tolsti,

That's a very good point, and if you find out, please post the results.

I'd like to add that i've flown every internal airlines (seemingly) in Indonesia, and this is no way surprises me EXCEPT for Garuda, who have been exceptional, operate relatively (emphasis on relatively) modern planes which are looked after by Boeing. I'd made the decision to only fly Garuda in the future after what happened with Adam Air and a couple of ropey flights last November, and I would personally be happy still flying them.

I suspect the tragic events of 7th March 2007 involving a Guruda operated Boeing 737-400 overshooting the runway in Yogyakarta may have something to do with the EU ban.

What happened here?

We're flying to Bali (Malaysian Airlines) in September and want to fly over to Java to visist Borobudur & Prambanan and would be flying into Jogyakarta.

Do you think it is a safe airline?
In the past, we've flown from LHR to Bali on Garuda 747s.

Thanks

Prettypollycat,

I can't say if they are a safe airline to fly with or not, but the people who make the decisions on these matter obviously think not since they are banned from EU airspace.

The Garuda 737-400 accident from 7th March 2007 is reported here.

Thanks, Darren.

I've read the report and it seemed to be a bit of a cock-up all round, sadly ending in tradegy.

It's also worth bearing in mind that Garuda still fly to Australia, and many other international destinations, it's just the EU that have taken this step.

I personally would be happy flying with them, and have done your exact flight fairly recently. However, if you decide you don't want to, you can still travel to Yogya by ferry and road (it's a long old trip), as under no circumstances should you miss Borobudur (at sunrise) - imo should be one of the worlds new 7 wonders of the world.

Thanks for that.

I'm a fatalist really (I believe when your number's up, it's up and if you're not on the plane that crashes, the next double-decker bus will flatten you :omg ) so I don't think this would put us off flying with Garuda.

However, you have given me something else to think about......

We visited Borobudur about 7 years ago (and I agree with you about how fabulous it is), but we did it in a (long) day - maybe we'll think about a 2 day trip instead as we have 3 weeks in Bali.

I'd better shut up before Fiona the mod tells me I'm getting :offtop
Thanks
