That's me back in Scotland. I have never seen a hand held radar gun in Spain, Portugal nor France, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. One of the most enjoyable things about missing the toll roads is going through towns and villages. Enjoy your trip.

Cheers mate not until next year but we are sure we will.

By the way keep me posted on relative topics to my journey on this thread if you don't mind pal and once again cheers for the info.

They do have speed traps in Portugal, unmarked cars with radar gun inside sometimes. Portuguese drivers are quite good at spotting them so slow down if a car coming the other way flashes you for no apparent reason...

BTW in France and Spain are they quite a lot of radar traps (guns)

In one word. YES! In France your speed is calculated from one "peage" on the motorway to the next. It can be determined by the time you entered the first peage to the time you get to the next one. Exceed 80kpm and you will find a "flic" there to take money from you. The fines can be excessive. There are also radar traps, (hand-held) and the first thing you will know about it when a group of "flics" armed to the teeth, will step into the road and stop you. The flics seem to like hiding in the trees and radio information to their colleages down the road. If you don't have the cash (can be up to 1,000 euros and NO thats not a missprint!) they will escort you to the nearest ATm to get the money. There is no appeal!!!!
There is also the possibility of you car being impounded if you can't cough up. The French police also consider it a crime if you have a radar checking receiver in you car. This will be taken from you and broken in front of you in addition to the fine. Moral======= Just don't speed.

That makes most Sat Nav systems illegal then as I'm pretty sure they use radar to tell you which way to go. Messes up single travellers.

Sat Nav systems use signals from satellites, and radar is not involved. I use TomTom regularly while travelling through France. What I was referrintg to is radar detectors: such as Road Angel.
