I would like to spend a day or two in Girona , but not sure how to get there . I have looked on the train timetable and unless i am reading it wrong i have to go to Barcelona first and then get a connection from there, is it possible to catch a bus or train from one of the resorts along the Costa Brava.

although this site is primarily for travel from the airport, there is a section called "Looking up Timetable Information For The Buses " which gives some good information.barcelona bus do go from gerona.
the bus and train stations in gerona adjoin and you can get a bus from Blanes to gerona town.
look at "renfe" site as well for info on trains
have a play with the timetables.
