I will be travelling to China in a couple of weeks and am unsure whether to change money in the UK or wait till I get there. I arrive in Hong Kong, then travel to Chengdu, Guilin, Xian, finally ending up in Beijing. If I change money over there will I get a better rate? and where can I change money? Which currencies would anyone recommend?I've heard US dollars are particularly useful as they are widely accepted. Can someone advise please?
Julie
we just used the ATMS in HK.I'm sure others will chip in with what they did. Welcome to HT Julie
We visited all the cities you mention and as we started in Beijing, I took a little local yuan with me and then simply withdrew locally at ATMs as and when required. (As you are starting in HK, you'll need HK$).
Can't say I've heard about US$ being accepted and we were never asked if we wanted to pay in US$.
If you've a current account, it's far easier to use ATMs - they are easy to use and have an english option.
We also used our debit card widely in HK to pay in restaurants and bars.
Any more Q's just shout.
