Hi All,
Can anyone advise me on the best island/resort for our family. We are 34 and 35 with two girls aged 4 and 2. We want to have a getaway at my daughters half term (29 Oct-start of nov). We want somewhere warm/hot, with a good beach, good places to eat and kid friendly.
We don't want it to be dead, but we dont want it to be all chicken and chips and brit bars either. We thought somewhere in the Canaries would be hot at this time of year. I've been to PDLA twice when I was about 23/24 in Feb and it was lovely weather, but very tacky and very British. We had a good laugh because we were young and all we wanted to do was drink and sunbathe, but I dont fancy that kind of resort now and not for the family. Can anyone advise me on which island/resort would be our best bet? The last few hols weve had have been Puerto Pollensa in Majorca, Skala in Kefolonia and Menorca.
Thanks
Em
try playa amadores, close to puerto rico so you have all the facilities of the resort but without actually being in it, Melonaras/maspalomas international resorts, more up market than the other resorts, both in Gran Canaria. Fuerteventura is more like the Menorca of the canaries if you enjoyed there.
I totally agree, Playa Amadores is the ideal winter break spot. The beach is by far the best on Gran canaria its not to comercialised like puerto rico its a bit more up and coming so it has all the facilities without to much of the brit bar thing.
Accomodation is plentiful in puerto rico and amadores beach is a 15-20 min strol along the sea front walk way of a couple of euro's in a taxi.
Have a look at the playa amadores web site (do a google search)
I have been to Puerto rico/amadores 4 times and am going back next june for the wifes 40th, yes its that good!!! The weather in november has always been good for us i would compare it to a good british very hot mid summer day (if you can remember what they were like).
If you want cheap chearful self catering accomdation the cumana apartment are OK clean but dated. A bit more upperclass are the Terazzamar Sunsuites, fairly new with massive terraces, we plan to go back there one day. I am staying at the gloria palce next time so cant realy quote on it yet but it has amazing reviews on here.
Have a look through the reviews for amadores and puerto rico and see what others have to say. Puerto rico is a love it or hate it kind of place but a good central place for shops brit bars etc, but dont think Ive ever seen a bad word writtern about amadores, sorry to go on but if I could get a job there id move out tomorrow.
good luck whatever you do.
Steve
This is a proper Spanish city, with a great colonial quarter in Veguata, but also has one of the worlds great city beaches, Las Canteras which is about 5km long. We were there on New Years day and the weather was excellent, around 25C. There are also many restaurants nearby where you can have amazing value Menus del dia. We ate at one such place where we had good 3 course meals, with wine or soft drinks for around 7 Euros.
In my opinon GC is a wonderful island, however you have to escape from the horrors of the South West coast to experience this.
Has to be Gran Can, somewhere in the south..perhaps Mogan, Amadores or Taurito. I am not keen on Puerto Rico as it is far too commercialised and reminds me of PDLA in Tenerife..very tacky and like Blackpool in the sun.
whilst i have to agree with senor bally however the problem can often be for families going to cities such as Las Palmas, is the language barrier and often food choices. for the independent travellers with a good basic spanish then i would highly recommend Las Palmas, but with the stress of a young family, sometimes a break in the sun means just that. Whilst PR and PDI are not everybodys taste they must be doing something right to be busy!!
we went to puerto rico in February. Had a great holiday but found resort a bit commercial for us. Plus points cheap food, great crazy golf, hottest place on the island access to boats ect.
Went to Maspalomas for the day and preferred it as a place to stay. Purpose built but chilled close to sand dunes, and camel rides. Did not like the resort Playa d ingles all high rise hotels.
Have also visited Lanzarote stayed in Costa Teguise good holiday resort clean but again purpose built. Very windy not as hot as Gran Canaria.
By the way we are going to puerto Pollensa in October.
Hope this helps
