On several occasions during our stay in The Algarve last week we all commented on how few insects were around. I think we only noticed a few ants on the beach but obviously were aware of the noisy crickets during the evenings! We did however notice funny noices coming from some trees. It sounded like an electric wire ... a constant buzzing sound that lasted for ages, then it would stop a few seconds and then start again
On our last day there someone said that they thought it was some kind of insect in the trees - can anyone tell us more?
Thanks.
........ that was probably a cicada. It sounded like an electric wire ... a constant buzzing sound that lasted for ages, then it would stop a few seconds and then start again

What is a cicada? I heard that noise all the time too.

Thanks Sagres - my Husband remembers seeing one of 'those' on one of the trees so I think you might be correct - thanks again!
