Why do Brits feel the need tip so much then?

Us tipping generously is, I think, part of our culture. In some countries it is the culture not to tip, or tip very little. For instance, I understand from taxi friends in Goa that the Russians tend not to tip or expect to negotiate on everything and even then may refuse to pay the negoiated price! The local taxi drivers prefer the English who tend to pay at least the agreed price. On the other hand, where some British have paid way too much, this can make it difficult for others as the higher prices are in danger of becoming the norm.

It all has to be down to choice - there is no manual or rules. My choice is to tip for good service, tip well for exceptional service or not tip at all if I have not been happy. I have also been known to vote with my feet if I feel I am being treated shoddily.

I did some waiting on many moons ago, and if no-one had left tips I would have been very sad.

You know what? It's each to their own... when I think back to how much we tipped and how many drinks we bought the shack boys it would of amounted to quite a bit... but it really doesn't matter to me, I felt they deserved it.

I can see the point of others that it MIGHT increase prices, even still it's hardly breaking the bank... afterall everyone's got to earn a living!!

We always tip the rooms boys and the boys at the shack. Not always the taxi drivers tho. Just depends what price they quote and if they are taking the in the first place. If they quote a fair price then they will also get a tip.
We always tip the room boy near the beginning of the holiday it means he takes good care of your room and gives you clean towels every single day. We also tip the room boy at the end of the holiday as well, it might not be a lot of money to us, but its a lot of money to them.
I NEVER EVER tip those porters at the airport, they make me livid when I think of them, I would rather donate the money to Children Walking Tall. Infact, that is something we were going to arrange last season and didnt get round to it. For every £1 we give those little horrors, the airport porters, we could collect in a tin at the meets and pass over to Rob. What does everyone else think?
P.S. I am a patriotic Scot but no one, absolutely no one, is better than anyone else, we are ALL equal. (Apart from Tightjock who is a Celtic fan of course - - Only joking pal )

hi we tip the room cleaner at the beginning of the season and also at the end and we dont tip the taxi drivers in fact if poss we use the bus .

when we left for mumbai last season i kept lots of 20r notes for tipping in mumbai and kept that as a limit for each person it was a good job we did cos everyone wanted a tip and we soon went through quite a few 20r notes

we took advice off goan friends re what to do regarding beggers and they said they give to disabled so we do that too

That's a good point about the small notes, I allways make sure to ask for a couple of hundred Rs in 10's and 20's, when I exchange money, and keep them to one side as they do come in handy, for travelling on the buses and small tips.
