monday 10th sept was a day i had looked forward to cos me and mrs happy were off to the town of old pomorie for the third year in a row.
0430 and a dig in the ribs gets me up and while the wife gets her face on i make the tea and toast (house trained or what?) and at 0545 after i put my face on its to the happy mobile and on to newcastle airport flight 0830
take off on time and on to manchester then on to bourgas, thru customs in about 15 mins but 1 hour wait for cases
still only 30 mins to the hotel st george in old town of pomorie and the ride there was smooth the new sunset resort in new pomorie looks like las vegas as we drive passed, off bus and to reception but whoa after greetings (they remember us from last year) my wife is told "sorry but we have a problem with your room,a single lady was given it by mistake and she will not move"as my wife starts to go purple fearing the worse me being a proper man walk away, "but we have given you an apartment for two nights and when you move a note stating all spa facilities are free" smiles all around and i walk back
up to apartment on top floor its massive and tho the rooms are great in the st george this is magic.two rooms two tellys bath and shower, kitchen and the view at the back the whole town of old pomorie and front the sea looking towards sunset resort and new pomorie.
so down for an bite to eat and a drink or two at the bar and grill kwik service and fodd Mmm .then offto bed Nooo pubbing so along the main street left from st george to open air bar same staff and same excellent service smiles and cheery welcome dry martini, sprite ,ice and big beer cost 4.78 lev and as we got in pomorie 2.80 to the £ thats £1.70p magic.
the beach has not changed but its a bit fuller than last year (pomorie is in the process of closing down) a few beach bars are still open as they were till around the20th.now pomorie aint for you party animals its a place to chill and watch the world go by.
one place to recommend is the americans or john waynes as we called it (its got a cowboy outside) just up from the hotel pomorie on the beach front food and service were first class super. all the bars we hit were great but will move on you might think we like a drink os summit
we went to (on the bus 5 lev one way) to nessebur three times (shopping ) and three times to sunny beach also took the boat from nessebur to centre of sunny beach 15 lev one way. now sunny beach in my opinion is ok for days but its too big and too noisey for an old fella like me.
now if sunny beach is your thing try to take the bus to pomorie centrum have a good look around and DO visit the st george monastery you will pass it on the bus its really nice we light two candles as we do every year for absent friends, bought some icons and left a donation its for a great cause, even had a chat with a monk who spoke english he told us the story of st george and was most supprised to find st george was the patron saint of england really great afternoon visit.
so all in all if its peace and quiet your looking for GO POMORIE! still close enough to sunny beach for party animals plus its cheaper than sunny beach and its almost the real bulgaria and remember if you go drink in the locals pub why cos its cheaper
We stayed in Nessebur 2 years ago and loved it,Is Pomorie similar?.
sounds like you scored with the accomodation
no pomorie i would say is much quieter than nessebur not as many little stalls selling everything but many years ago pomorie was simaler but most of it was destroyed by fire in the 1800s plus it is not as crowded as nessebur well not in sept anyway i would say pomorie is more like the real bulgaria while nessebur is for the tourist.but like i said if you like peace and quiet go pomorie.
fiona
we sure did the room was great but we knew the air bulgaria people use this hotel staying in these rooms i guess, but having said that all the rooms we have stayed in over the three years we have been going have been excellent in fact i would say we love this hotel and the staff fantastic people as are all bulgarians we have met.and if royal mail ever gives me early retirememt its off to live in bulgaria first plane
Obviously, unlike yourself, not quite ready for the knackers yard, mind you I would like the early retirement bit. Let the wife do it instead and now I'm keeping her in the luxury she's become accustomed to. ( I must be daft. )
