Where to go Sking for first timers
----------------------------------------
Hi
We are a family with two kids 14 and 8 years olds and have never been sking before. we are looking to go Feb 05, i have looked at Andorra, France Italy, Austria and Bulgaria, they all have there good and bad points.
Andorra has a good reputation for first timers, Austria and Italy are expensive.
We like good accomodation, but what to go for is another thing Hotel, Aparthotel, or self-catering in a chalet. To buy our extra before we go or not, it is such an expense on top of your basic hotel price.
All your opionions would be a great help,
Ally

Andorra is very good for first timers and it is cheap too. Austria isn't all that expensive and is one of my favourites. France is excellent for first timers and in some resorts it can be quite cheap. I prefer to stay in a catered chalet in France. Switzerland is very expensive and so I'd give that a miss until you have been skiing for a few years. St Anton in Austria is good for first time skiers but the lifts are mostly drag lifts and not only are they a pain in the bum, they take forever to get to the top of the slope.
Canada is superb for everyone. You can get some good deals and the food is really cheap. However, the lift passes are very expensive but compare it to the very very wide open slopes, long runs, it's top of my list.
Hope you have a lovely time whatever resort you go to. Just remember, each resort has its good points and its bad points but whatever you chose, you will have a magical time.

Thanks for your reply, i have narrowed my search down to Austria or Italy, both have there good and bad points as you said. waiting for the 2005 seasons prices to come out, i think it will be La Thuile in Italy or Soll, Ellmau or Niederau in Austria.
The "If you ski" web site is very good for info but very conflicting reviews, no forums to ask questions before you go, apart from here .
Any other ski web sites you know off would be a help, or have you been to any of these resorts above?
Many thanks
Ally

La Thuile
--------------
The Planibel apartments in La Thuile are very popular with a lot of people we send to Italy. The Crystal Ski brochure 2004 / 2005 came out today.
Hope it helps

Re: Family Ski
-----------------
Hi,
we are in a similar position to the first poster except that our boys (aged 15 & 18 ) can ski - several school trips - but we parents have not. Hope I'm not too old for this!
We are actually thinking about Easter 2005 & I fancy a catered chalet/club hotel in France but would welcome advice on resorts (& in other countries). We need good instruction for beginners plus good skiing for intermediate/advanced teenagers & some nightlife that we can all enjoy. I've seen several purpose built resorts e.g. Les Arcs but are they concrete jungles? Having never been, I don't really know what to look for - so advice please on both locations but also the different tour operators! Thanks.

hi Cricketnuggie,
We wanted to book hotel vicky, and have the one bed aprt there, but they were already 'pre' booked, you'll get a really good deal staying their, free skiing and hire etc. but the week we wanted and the rooms, the Hotel Sonnechein would only fit us in, i have a 15 and 9 year olds.
you have had a bargin! for half term too, i phoned up on the day the brouchers came out and it was all booked up, the hotel vicky is a fab hotel you will love it there.
where are you buying all your gear from? eg jackets, salupettes etc?, it so expensive.
Thanks Ally.

family skiing holiday in europe - first timers!
------------------------------------------------------
Any advice would be greatly appreciated with regard to a family skiing holiday in Europe for two adults and five children flying from Ireland. Children range in age from 13 years down to 3 years.
We would require a resort with a short transfer from the airport, so I think that Andorra would definitely be out of the question for us.
Unsure also about the type of accommodation to go for - hotel, apartment or chalet?
It would be ideal to have somewhere with a kids club or kids skiing school and maybe a swimming pool for the older children to use in the evening
I have a suite there http://www.alluradirect.com/826or drop the 826 to get a list of all owner direct suites in Whistler.
I can also work in GBP or Euros or you can book direct with creditr card on the site.
For cheap flights to Canada check out:
http://www.flyzoom.com
http://www.canadian-affair.com
If you're going to make the trip across the Atlantic, definitely head for the Rockies. You can get a flight on Zoom Airlines - http://www.flyzoom.com - that works out at £365 inclusive of taxes if you book early and/or the seats aren't selling well - you could have got that price for next Christmas up until a few weeks ago, but Feb and Easter next year are both still available.
From Calgary, you can try the popular areas around Banff, but it's quieter, cheaper and warmer on the other side of the Rockies in the Columbia Valley. There's some fantastic condos - real luxury with jacuzzi baths and pool tables - that rent for between 700 and 1500 Canadian dollars (£300 to £700) for a week in winter; anywhere from 3 to 5 bedrooms - http://www.fairmontcreek.ca .There are also Hot Springs just a short hike or drive up the road. You can ski there too, 5 minutes by car, at rates way below the bigger resorts - adults about £17 and children £12 a day for lift tickets. The ski area is small and family orientated and you could also take a scenic drive about 45 minutes to Panorama, with enough terrain to keep you interested for a week. Of course, you'd need a car, which can be had for around £80 a week excluding CDW - see http://www.kasbah.com . The driving is fantastic on near-deserted roads with awesome views.
http://www.ski-europe.com which said that the low altidude means slush and ice and little in the way of snow. After paying all the money we want to be able to learn to ski!!! any comment anyone?!
We are after looking at all the brouchures now and we think that either kitzbuhel, mayrhofen or zell am see are the places for us and we are edging toward kitzbuhel for around early march 2006. has anyone been there at this time of year or any really for that matter? i am really worried about lack of snow as i read a review in Post a Reply
