You wont really get cheap flights from Sydney to UK as you wll only be able to buy an airlines published fare in the uk. Better to get you friend to try an agent in australia to try and get a good local fare and you can wire the money to them.
If your not keen to do that, try and get them to south east asia ie Singapore or Bangkok and try for a cheap tix from there.
