Hi all was wondering if you could help me please, my son is in the army in Germany and he and his fiance have just had a new baby. My husband, myself and daughter want to visit this friday until monday, flying from scotland. I have tried all different options to get there. The best airport near them is Hanover or Breman. I would have to fly from glasgow with ryanair to london stanstead and then on to Breman which is working out really expensive for the three days. However, i can fly on friday night from edinburgh to dortmund with easyjet working out at a reasonable price. We were then going to hire a car from dortmund to drive to fallingbostel - can anyone confirm if this would be an option for us or give us any other information which would help.
Thanks in advance
Jem ,It is 262kms from Dortmund to Fallingbostel which will take about 2 and a half hours.I dont know if Easyjet fly into the main airport or if Dortmund has a smaller airport a few miles out of town. You can get driving instructions on Google earth but as you will arrive in the dark it may be better to stay near the airport overnight.I lived in fabulous Fallingbostel many years ago but we used Hanover airport or drove overland. We are going back in May but my son is organising it and as we are going from our local airport I think it will be Hanover airport we will be using. My son usually hires a car at the airport and uses Easyjet car hire which are generally good value.Jay.
Thanks very much for that, as this was a last minute decision to go, the flights from scotland to hanover or Breman were working out nearly £500 for three of us. My daughter in law who is german was due her baby at the end of January and our plan was to go out in february to see my granddaughter. However, she was nearly four weeks early, hence the rush. We got really good prices for flying into dortmund from edinurgh with easyjet. My son was going to pick us up and I know its 2 1/2 hours drive, its the thought of him driving really 5 hours and then having to do the same on monday again. My husband has driven for nearly 25 years but never abroad. I went with my sister for a long weekend to spain to see my other sister a couple of years ago and I asked the same questin on here about hiring a car and driving on the other side of the road. We hired the car and my sister drove with no problems, but seemingly Germany is different. My son seems to think we will be fine. I might take your suggestion however, and stay in a hotel that night at the airport. Thanks again for your help.
Hi Jem,It is many years since I lived in Fallingbostel but I learnt to drive there in a right hand drive car!.After I passed my test I didnt dare drive on autobahns as there was no speed limit then!.I think there is a limit now and I think you will find it better than Spain as there will be more locals on the road as opposed to tourists.I hope the baby is fine,Was she born in BMH hanover.?Thats where my daughter was born. When you come back would you tell me how you found Fallingbostel as I loved it and can hardly wait to go back.
Yes that was where she was born on the 3rd July and I am dying to see her, its my first grandchild. I will definitely let you know on my return how Fallingbostel was. I hope there is only the one airport at Dortmund as we are picking up a car when we land and I hope that its the right airport!!!
Will let you know all on my return.
Thanks again for your help.
