We have just returned from Goa and loved it. Our next holiday now needs to be in either April/May so we are considering Thailand. The thing is I don't know that much about it, other than most people who have been rave about it. We are 4 adults and 3 children (12,12 & 15) thinking of maybe Pattya, but we would like to spend a couple of days in Dubai if poss. How much each is about right for flight hotel etc. Who flys from Manchester? is the cost of meals drinks etc the same/similar as goa when there? Will the weather be ok at this time of year? All info gratefully recieved

You will love Thailand I'm sure. I've been to Goa and loved it and am shortly going back to Thailand for the third time.
The weather is better in Thailand the earlier in the year you go so if you can go in March, I would recommend that.
I would advise you DON'T go to Pattaya with three relatively young children. I went there last year and the main touristy area is called Walking Street. This is full of restaurants and bars but the majority of bars are Go Go bars, with scantily clad girls offering all sorts. To be honest, it's pretty seedy and there are way better places in Thailand to go for families.
Koh Samui is lovely, I'm off to Hua Hin in a couple of weeks, which is the holiday destination of the Thai Royal family. Evidently they don't have Go Go bars there, just 'normal' bars and restaurants etc, parts of Phuket and Krabi are lovely as are some of the smaller islands.
Price wise, it's a little dearer than Goa overall, but still really cheap. We found this little restaurant last year in Pattaya that did fantastic food and it worked out at £5.40 total for two starters, two mains and a beer each!
A beer is around 60-70p if you stay away from the really big bars, or can be around a £1 for a bottle of Chang (nice beer mmmmm
)
If you eat in one of the better hotels, it can cost £20-30 for two at lunchtime ( we paid this in the Sheraton - top top food, but expensive by local rates).

can't go in March (my friend does not have enough hols,start again in Apr) thats why we were looking for somewhere other than Goa (coz of the weather etc) don't want to take the kids near go go bars or my OH for that,then again he might decide to stay

We have just booked to go back to Hua Hin in July. Went 2 summers ago with our kids, now 16 and 13.
It was great for families. We stayed in the Hilton which is in the middle of the town (on the beach) and felt safe enough to let the kids go the 7/11 across the street and stay in the hotel at the cinema or crazy golf while we had dinner/drinks in Hua Hin Brewery next to hotel.
There are alot of Northern European families with kids in Hua Hin and they all mixed well around the pool.
We looked at Pattaya for this year but we put off by the comments from friends - just too seedy for the kids.

that's where I'm staying in a couple of weeks time - Hilton Hua Hin It seems to have some v.good reviews.

Would agree with previous posts. Koh Samui is fantastic, we also stayed in Chaweng but a little out at the Imperial samui hotel which was very good. we travelled around the island both by road and by boat and really liked it. extremely friendly people, food fantastic and the Chang beer - excellent!!!

Thailand on the other hand is very friendly, we found Dubai quite soulless - our opinion though. I'm sure when all the building work is finished Dubai will be a better place to go.

We booked with Thomson - flying Emirates via Dubai. £3088 for 4 adults 14 nights Hilton Huan Hin B&B. I just couldn't touch that price DIY
When did you book that Jack and do Thompson fly to there from Manchester?
Booked it on Sunday night http://www.thomsonasia.co.uk. Yes they fly from Manchester, Birmingham, Heathrow, Newcastle, Gatwick and Glasgow.
It was slightly cheaper for us to go out of Gatwick. the flight is to Bangkok and then we have the 3 hour taxi ride to Hua Hin. The transfer is not included but it will be cheaper for me to arrange this myself.

It was slightly overcast with bursts of strong sunshine but the main thing was it wasn't rainy like Bangkok.
Lack of rain at that time of year was the original reason we picked Hua Hin over Phuket. I believe that Phuket may be sunnier but has afternoon down pours.
I usually use the website http://www.wunderground.com for weather research because it has acouple of years of data.

I wouldn't go to Phuket in July I'm afraid
According to some websites and forums I've been looking on, a taxi from Bangkok airport to Hua Hin is currently around 2800baht one way by normal taxi. More for a limo obviously.
