Not done an independent transfer to Thassos but I would think it would be straight forward the port is only a couple of kilometres from the airport and there seemed to be plenty of taxi's running back and fore. The same seemed to be true once you got to the island. I you have not been to Thassos before you will love it. The short ferry ride sets you up just right as you travel to a different world.
Got to echo what Mehallie says. We went with Thomson to Thassos last year. It was the most 'Greek' place we have been to.
Kavala airport is only very small. The ferries run about every half hour. When you get to Thassos town the island itself is not very big if you need a taxi transfer from there.
I recommend you ask the most knowledgeable people on the thassos forum at http://www.thassos-forum.com. The International section is in English and there are several ex-pats contributing.
Enjoy your hols

got some work colleagues who have a place on Thassos. They are going to Thessaloniki with easy jet from Gatwick then driving up to the ferry crossing. I don't know the costings but worth a look on the web. Whatever you choose enjoy and feedback please. always useful to have first hand information and opinions.
We went to Philipi on that journey, if your interested in history its worth the trip over to the mainland from Thassos.
