Hi Tracey

The Grand is somewhat above the harbour, and its not a noisy harbour anyway, so don't worry about that. I'd go for The Grand over Ta Cenc - I'd also consider Kempinski Hotel in San Lawrenz, or hiring a farmhouse

Thanks Mark!.

We did look at Kempinski Hotel and it looks lovely but did wonder if it was a little remote?.

Ideally we would like somewhere that we could walk into the village/town for our evening meal and drinks, we would take a Bed and breakfast basis at the hotel.

Kempinski - there are two decent restaurants within 10 mins walk - the hotel is nice but expensive incl its restaurants - good leisure facilites (pool, gym, tennis etc) - its not remote, but nothing is that remote in Gozo

Ta Cenc - two good restaurants in 5 mins walk

Grand - 6-8 restaurants close by, and some really good bars - its a good family run hotel, and if you take the sea view rooms, they have massive balconies

ps I live in Gozo, so ask any questions you have
pps no, I don't work for The Grand !

thanks again Mark!

Sounds like The Grand Hotel might be the one for us then!.

We like the sound of Victoria for an evening out, how far approx is the Grand to Victoria?.

Also, we have read that the town of Marsalforn can be busy during the summer months, when it says busy, does it mean "busy busy" like one of the main Maltese resorts or just busier than the other places on Gozo?.

:)

Grand to Victoria - about 3-4 miles

Marsalforn - yes gets busy, but not too much - why would you want to go there ?

Is it not a nice place to stay?.

There were a couple of hotels which looked ok but after reading it was a busy town, I wondered just how busy.

Just making sure we pick the best place for our honeymoon ;)

Marsalforn is not a honeymoon place to me, with the possible exception of Calypso Hotel - which hotels were you thinking of ?

ps what are your exact dates ? I'd definitely recommend you go to a festa on while you are in Gozo

week ending 27 Jul Sannat
week ending 03 Aug Qala

if you are in Gozo for weekend of 26/27th July , then Maybe Ta Cenc is better given its on the edge of Sannat (which is where I live) - a Gozitan festa is great fun

The Calypso Hotel was one, but not as nice as The Grande or Ta Cenc (looking at Piccies!!).

I have read some bad reviews of Ta Cenc saying its run down in need to refurbishment, not a 5 star
hotel etc etc, do you think/know if these comments are true?.

I dont usually pay much attention to online reviews as they are either "wow what a fab place" or "the worst place on earth" :que

Dates would either be last weekend in July or first weekend in August.

The Festa's sound good fun!

Thanks again

Ta Cenc used to be one of the best hotels in Europe (15 years ago) , but certainly needs refurbishment - its in a stunning location, but is showing its age - I've seen the reviews, and I'd say most are accurate - it depends on what aspect you focus on

Calypso was refurbed a couple of years ago, and is very modern

BTW - the festa dates I gave are for 2008, so might be a week out either side for 2009....the Sannat one is normally the run-up to the last weekend in July, but not always !

just to complicate matters, have you thought of hiring a farmhouse, rather than staying in an hotel ? (about Euro 120 per night)

ok another question already!.

We have come across another place which we like the look of as well. It looks like a complex of some sort as they have a hotel, bungalows, villas and farmhouses.

Its called Cornucopia in the town of Xagħra.

Any thoughts/comments please on the complex and the town?.

thanks!

Tracey

Cornucopia is a hotel (2/3 star realistically, not the 4 they officially have) with bungalows on the other side of the road, and AFAIK only one farmhouse - Xaghra is nice - several good restaurants. Would personally go for the Grand over this - Cornucopia to me is more for families, not what I'd call a honeymoon hotel

PS Cornucopia is part of the same group as Ta Cenc Hotel and St Patricks in Xlendi
