thanks but then i worry about the safety of them too since having money taken from my account illegaly before.
i had used an atm which must have had some type of skimming device then within hours of using the atm, my card had been used again miles away, does this kind of thing go on on atms abroad too??
thanks
I have stopped using my card in restaurants and shops though, I usually just lift out enough cash from the ATM to pay.
Although I've never had any problem that way either but I don't like letting my card out of sight, which does happen in restaurants.
Robertk - you still here on the island hon? Speak to your bank and see if they offer what my bank does (Solbank). I get a free text every time my credit card is used (up to 20 a month... and despite being a woman, I don't use it THAT often).
alternatively would i be better to take cash and change it over in lanzerote??
if anyone could advise it would be much appreciated thanks
hi everyone! we are off to lanzarote on the 10th july never been before and haven't changed my money yet. my other half has been told by a friend to change it over there as you get a better rate. to be honest i've always done this before going anywhere on hol and am a bit nervous to do this is there plenty of places to do this and also what is the rate at the moment. thanks for any help
Hi sunnygirl! The rate yesterday in Puerto del Carmen was 1.23. There are several Asian shops along the Avenida doing cash money exchange. Caravana (beneath MacDonalds) also has a foreign currency desk, but it is closed at the moment, although they did say it would be open in a week to ten days.
I have been getting 1.27 using Nationwide card.
HI MAD SUE AND RAYMAHER / thanks for your help, firstly sue, are the places you mentioned in PDC? and do they charge commision? also raymaher is your nationwide card a credit card or a current account card? i have heard you get a good deal with these cards but would you have to withdraw the cash or use your card all the time? thanks for your help again ps just a question for the moderaters..i was waiting to be notifyed that some help had been given for this question so when i reecieved the email i clicked on it and it took me to a question i had asked on the america/canada discussion forum a year ago and now i've got the orlando bug back!! just thought i should let you know
Yes, sunnygirl, all in Puerto del Carmen. The asian places say no commission on their signs, not sure about Caravana though

Hi sunnygirl, the card I have is a cash card for a flexaccount but I believe a Nationwide credit card is the same.
A credit card is not the same as a Nationwide FlexAccount/debit card. If you withdraw cash on your credit card you will be charged interest from the moment you withdraw it at a fairly high interest rate. However both cards can be used to make purchases at a favourable exchange rate.
Lucy, Thanks for clearing that up.
hi pippy and luci thanks for the help. i've been notifyed about both your replys correctly so i'm assuming it was just a blip! thanks everyone for the advice re nationwide credit card, i think we will just change some cash over there and use the card for the extras that crop up take care all 12 days and counting!!
Just in the process of opening a Nationwide flex a/c due to the attractive commission free incentive for ATM's abroad.....!!! Just wondering what rate of Euros you are getting out of the machines at the moment.......??
I've not used my card yet but will in a short while and will probably be able to check tomorrow for the nationwide rate, but the rate of exchange in playa blanca has been 1.26€ to the pound.
The nationwide rate is the VISA rate, you can check it here:-
Thanks for that !!! Glad i've decided to go with Nationwide then......!!! Have a great day.....All the best,
