My wife and I are thinking going to Bulgaria this summer but do not know where is best.
We have visited Albena and it was OK but a bit too much concrete.
We would be flying from Manchester, East Midlands or Birmingham. (I know that Balkan are being silly about flying to Varna)
We would be looking for 4 star or better
Here are some things about us
We are about 50 years old,
We don't
drive
do "active",
like lager louts
like noise
need hotel entertainment
We do like
food
drink
history
culture
scenic views
lying round pools getting slightly drunk
peace and quiet
We don't mind
mixing with other nationalities
type of board basis
I like history especially military history
My wife like geology
Any suggestions would be welcome?
John
I would suggest St Konstantin. Have not stayed there but visited during the day and evening during the last couple of years. It is quieter than the other resorts, personally I like Albena, the beach is superb and if you stay somewhere near the Gergana it is in a quiet part of the resort. There are a few hotels that seem ok, you might want to check with the reviews. You will be near enough to Varna to visit easily.
Agree with St Konstantin, would suggest Grand Hotel Varna.
I would tend to agree with Nels & Patka about Sveti Konstantin, as far as the Northern coastal resorts are concerned. Nearby Varna has a Naval Museum, in the city's Sea Garden, an Archaeological Museum & an Ethnographical Museum, among others - also the remains of a Roman Spa and some notable churches.
You will find a view of Sveti Konstantin which I took a couple of years ago here.
I also like Albena (as much as I like any resort, which is not much), which is well-managed and not overdeveloped in comparison with the other large resorts - if you think that there's too much concrete there, I'd strongly suggest that you should avoid the heavily overdeveloped resorts of Golden Sands & Sunny Beach.

I would agree with Baldur completely!! We stayed in Albena and took a taxi to Golden Sands, which other people had raved about and arranged to be picked up several hours later, fortunately we had the driver's phone number and were heading back after about an hour. I would say it is the polar opposite of what you are after. We stayed at the beach club at the far end of the resort in Albena, so it was very quiet and we really enjoyed our holiday, but as a 4* it wasn't comparable to a 4* here. Don't know where you stayed in Albena before, but as a base to explore from it's in quite a good location. It does sound though as if you need to look into the older, smaller towns.
There is a slight problem with Sveti Konstantin in that Balkan flights from where we live either stop off somewhere else on there way to Varna or fly to Bourgas and we face a long transfer.
Does anyone know of other companies that go to Sveti Konstantin?
And/or
Does anyone have a suggestion for the reorts around Bourgas?
Best wishes
John

From a very quick Google search, Directline show holidays to Sveti Konstantin from Manchester on Fridays; the flight code is MV5A, so not a Balkan Holidays (BGH) flight code (unless it's a code-share arrangement).
One of the available hotels is the Grand Hotel Varna (5*)

Baldur, ref your last reply MV5A has the meaning
In which vcase it looks as though it is a BGH flight, as Balkan are the only charter airline shown on the Manchester Airport website as flying from there to Varna on Fridays.
