Hello all, most years when we go to the Algarve we stay in Albufeira and always go to Silves on the bus, this year we will be staying in Lagos an have noticed that there is a train from Lagos to Silves. As with most of the Stations along the Algarve the Station for Silves looks to be out side the town itself, does anybody know how far it is, can it be walked or do you have to get a taxi?
Dave.
About a 10 minute walk, that's all. If you intend to visit other towns / resorts by rail, bear in mind that the only ones with stations in, or within walking distance of, town are : Portimao,Almancil,Faro,Olhao,Tavira and Vila Real de St. Antonio.... and don't forget to allow plenty of time to queue and purchase your tickets.
Cheers Sagres, we will be getting a car to visit some places, but will go by train to Silves as we always have a nice lunch and a few beers by the river at Silves thats why we will go on the train.
It is rather uphill from the town back to the station but a cab should cost only a few € if required. The buses are a bit erratic but take only 5 minutes. You can take either the Portimao bus (it stops by the level crossing) or the other bus which goes up to the station itself.
Hello cubsur, thanks for the info, when you say (it is rather uphill) how much of a hill are we talking about?
Fairly steep! You cross the river then up the hill maybe half a mile, under the road bridge and round then it flattens out.
Hello cubsur, thanks once again looks like its a taxi back to the station then.
It's about a 25 minute walk but could be fairly difficult with kids and pushchairs or the infirm as there is no pavement and some sharp bends for some of the journey. However, do not let that put you off your visit as the Railway Bar at the station is a nice stop off point and Albertino and Sharon, who are very good friends of mine, will welcome you for a drink and call you cab, which will cost no more than about 4 euros and will take about 4 minutes. Worth it just to save some energy for a leisurely stroll around the cobbled streets of Silves. Definitely recommend the visit as there is lots to see and do and some lovely little restaurants, especially the Rui Marisqueira (fish restaurant) which is one of the best on the Algarve. If you decide to visit Albertino, mention that Jeanette sent you and be assured of a great welcome!!
