Hi,
Six months ago we went to Tenerife with First Choice. When we arrived at our accomodation, it was dirty, dark and infested with cockroaches! So much so, we decided that we couldn't stay there. The rep was unhelpful so we found and paid for alternative accomodation for the week ourselves.
The next day we returned to the apartment to take photos etc, and to our amazement another family were staying there.
On our return to the UK, we approached First Choice and asked for the the cost of the additional apartment to be refunded but was declined. However, we feel that as another family stayed at the apartment, First Choice have effectively got double revenue from the apartment. In essence, they were able to re-let the property.
We have been to ABTA but no joy, which surprised us.
Before we take this to the Small Claims Court, has anyone ever been in this situation and what was the outcome?

Are you sure the hotel didn't just let out the room again? Nothing to do with First Choice?

Did you fill in a complaints form via the rep?
Hi, I don't much about FC's policies but with the company I work for, if you up and leave the accomodation you originally booked you are considered to have curtailed your holiday and the room can be used for a new booking. Or as Chivas says, its possible the hotel manager took advantage of you leaving and put another family in. Did you speak to them? Were they having the same problems as you?
When you say the rep was no help, do you mean that he/she didn't move you straight away? It can take up to 24 hours to organise a change of accom as it is not up to the rep but their manager, the UK office and depends a lot on the availability of a suitable alternative. It is quite time consuming and not as easy as folks think. Did they offer you a change of room within the same accom? Could the problems have been rectified? Could you have called the resort office, gone over the reps head and spoken directly to the resort manager?

Is it possible that your original room was occupied but there was still a room available for you? Did you sign any forms over there on checking out? fill in a complaints form in resort?
